Chapter Twenty Eight
Friday, 9th
It was lunchtime and the café was crowded. Caroline and Mary managed to secure a table for two near the door amongst the pockets of chattering ladies, screeching school girls and mumbling older couples.
A waiter arrived with surprising promptness. Mary ordered a sandwich and tea while Caroline opted for cola and lasagne with chips instead of her usual salad. After a moment’s hesitation, she then asked for a slice of coffee cake as well, to be brought while the main meals were being prepared.
As Mary spoke an impish grin stole across her features, but her words were lost in the din.
“I said, ‘Energy boost is it?’ You look a bit tired.”
