Chapter Twenty Eight Friday, 9th It was lunchtime and the café was crowded. Caroline and Mary managed to secure a table for two near the door amongst the pockets of chattering ladies, screeching school girls and mumbling older couples. A waiter arrived with surprising promptness. Mary ordered a sandwich and tea while Caroline opted for cola and lasagne with chips instead of her usual salad. After a moment’s hesitation, she then asked for a slice of coffee cake as well, to be brought while the main meals were being prepared.
