Chapter Twenty Seven
Thursday; Late afternoon
Since the meeting with Richard, Caroline avoided or deflected any awkward conversations with her team about the presentation and the potential fallout. She decided not to go home. She stayed at the office until everyone else had left. It was important not to look as if she were running away.
Concentrating on work was impossible though. Her train of thought constantly drifted back to the events of the past few weeks. She’d been so stupid, putting her life with Joe in jeopardy for something as trivial as the ego boost of Ben’s attention. It felt as if she had unwittingly started a series of events which had got completely out of control. She couldn’t believe how fast things had snowballed.
