Chapter 1 JAKE POV
I woke up feeling like absolute s**t. I definitely shouldn’t have gone out drinking with my Beta and Gamma last night. As I rolled over, the first thing I felt was a physical presence next to me. I bolted upright, instantly awake, and rubbed a hand over my face. "What the hell are you doing here, Louise? Get the f**k out. Now," I shouted. She jumped out of bed, startled. I marched her to the door and made sure to lock it behind her before heading to the shower. I knew she’d try to sneak back in otherwise. I groaned, leaning my head against the cool tile. Why do I even bed her? She was a good lay, but that was it. Stepping out, I tried to mind-link my Beta. ‘Alex, you up?’ No reply. I tried my Gamma. ‘Jay?’ No answer either. What the f**k? As I dried myself off and got ready for the day, my wolf, Echo, started pacing around frantically in my head. It was highly unusual for him to be this restless. ‘What’s wrong?’ I asked him. All I got back was a single, booming word: ‘MATE.’ "I know, buddy. We will find her one day," I muttered aloud, trying to soothe him. It seemed to work; he turned around and lay down quietly in the back of my mind. I was just about to leave my room when a powerful mind-link cut through my thoughts. It was my father, the current Alpha of the Blood Moon pack. ‘Jake. You better get down to my office. NOW.’ ‘Coming now, dad,’ I replied. He never called me into his office unless it was incredibly important. As I walked down the stairs, I bumped straight into my Beta. "Why the hell did you not answer me, Alex? And where are you off to?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "Well, your father just shouted down the link to get to his office now," Alex replied with a shrug. "Funny that, since that’s exactly where I’m going myself. Wonder what’s going on." When we reached the heavy oak doors of the office, I could hear my dad on the phone inside. He sounded completely stressed out. Before I could even knock, his voice boomed through the wood: "Come in!" Alex and I walked in and exchanged a look. Alex’s dad was already there—which made sense, since he was my dad’s Beta—along with Jay’s dad, my dad’s Gamma. The tension in the room was thick. Alex and I sat down on the sofa, waiting for my father to finish his call. The moment he slammed the phone down, he looked up. "I need you three..." He paused, his eyes scanning the room. "Where the hell is Jay?" he shouted. "Most likely still passed out," Alex laughed. I couldn't help but chuckle too. I looked at Alex, about to tell him to link Jay to get his ass down here, when a frantic knock hit the door. Jay burst in, breathless. "Sorry, Alpha! I got here as soon as I could." "Sit down, Jay," my dad sighed, rubbing his temples. "Right, let’s start again. I need you three to go to the Sunrise Pack today. I just had Alpha Jason on the phone. They have been attacked again by rogues. Half their warriors are injured, and he is worried they won't survive another hit." My dad leaned forward, his expression deadly serious. "Five attacks in the last week. No other packs have been targeted. This has to stay strictly between us, but Jason thinks they are after someone specific in their pack." I processed the information quickly. "So, I take it you want us to go there with some of our warriors to help if another attack happens?" "Correct, son," my dad said. "I want you to take 150 warriors, Jake. Stay there for a few days and see what’s going on." "Roger that, father." Before I could even tell Jay to get the warriors ready, he was already on his feet and heading for the door. That was exactly why I picked him as my Gamma; the guy just knew what to do. Alex, on the other hand, already had his tablet out, writing down everything that needed to be handled strategy-wise. "If that’s all, dad, we best get a move on so we can be there by lunchtime," I said. A little later, I was back in my room throwing clothes into a duffel bag. A soft knock sounded at the door. "Jake, can I come in, please?" It was my mom. She opened the door, just looking at me with unshed tears in her eyes. "Mom, what’s wrong?" I asked, pausing my packing. "Your father just told me you are going to the Sunrise Pack to help, and that you're taking our warriors," she said softly, walking over. "I just want you to be careful there, Jake." I stepped forward and wrapped her in a tight hug. "I will be okay, Mom. I'll be back home in a week." "I love you, son." "I love you too, Mom," I said, pulling back with a reassuring smile. "But I really have to get on with packing
