The Divorce He Wanted
CHAPTER ONE
“Sign the papers, Elena.”
The smile on my face disappeared immediately after Adrian pushed the divorce documents across the table. Just a few minutes ago, I had been thinking about how to tell him I was pregnant, but now my mind could barely process the bold letters staring back at me.
Divorce Agreement
I slowly looked up at him, hoping this was some kind of cruel joke, but Adrian sat across from me with a cold expression that instantly killed that hope. His sleeves were rolled slightly, his tie loosened carelessly, and his attention remained fixed on me like he had already prepared himself for this conversation long before coming home tonight.
“What is this supposed to mean?” I finally asked.
“You already know why we’re here.”
“No, I don’t.”
Without saying another word, he threw a brown file onto the table. Confused, I opened it and immediately froze after seeing confidential company documents attached to my email account. My stomach tightened painfully while I flipped through the pages.
“This has to be a mistake.”
Adrian leaned back slightly and crossed his arms. “The files were leaked this morning using your laptop.”
I shook my head immediately. “I didn’t send anything.”
“The evidence says otherwise.”
The calmness in his voice made everything worse. He wasn’t angry or emotional. He sounded disappointed, like I had failed some important test.
“You think I betrayed you?” I asked quietly.
“I think somebody inside my house leaked company secrets.”
I stared at him in disbelief. “So after three years together, you’re not even going to ask for my side of the story?”
His jaw tightened slightly. “I gave you the chance to explain.”
“You handed me divorce papers.”
Silence settled heavily between us while I struggled to understand how things became this bad. Three years ago, marrying Adrian Knight turned me into the center of every business headline in the country. Everyone called me lucky for becoming the wife of the youngest billionaire CEO in the city, but nobody knew how lonely the marriage actually felt behind closed doors.
Adrian was never cruel, just distant, cold and untouchable.
I kept convincing myself things would improve eventually because part of me genuinely loved him despite everything. Even when he missed anniversaries, buried himself in work, or treated our marriage more like responsibility than love, I still stayed.
Now I felt stupid for believing things could change.
“I would never hurt you,” I whispered.
His eyes finally lifted toward mine, but the warmth I searched for wasn’t there. “People change when money becomes involved.”
The words hurt more than I expected. I laughed softly and looked away before he noticed the tears gathering in my eyes.
“So that’s what you think of me.”
Adrian stood up from his chair and walked toward the large window overlooking the city lights. Even from behind, he looked completely calm while my chest felt like it was being torn apart slowly.
“I don’t want this becoming public drama,” he said quietly. “Sign the papers and leave peacefully.”
Leave peacefully.
Like I was some stranger causing problems in his perfect life.
My fingers tightened around the edge of the table as yesterday’s hospital visit flashed through my mind again.
Congratulations, Mrs. Knight. You’re pregnant.
I spent the entire day thinking about how Adrian would react after hearing the news. Some foolish part of me hoped the baby might finally bring us closer together.
Instead, he was ending our marriage before I even got the chance to tell him.
“I love you, Adrian.”
The words slipped out before I could stop them.
He slowly turned around and looked at me carefully, but his expression remained unreadable.
“I spent three years trying to become the kind of woman you could actually love,” I continued quietly. “I blamed myself every time you pulled away because I thought maybe I just wasn’t enough.”
“Elena”
“No, let me finish.” I stood up slowly and looked directly at him. “Do you know how exhausting it is loving somebody who makes you feel unwanted every single day?”
For the first time tonight, guilt flickered briefly across his face.
But it disappeared too quickly.
“This isn’t about our marriage.”
“Really?” I laughed bitterly. “Because it feels like you’ve been waiting for a reason to get rid of me.”
Before Adrian could answer, the sound of heels echoed through the hallway. A few seconds later, Vivian Cross walked into the dining room wearing a fitted black dress and an expression that immediately changed after seeing me.
“Oh,” she said softly. “I didn’t realize you were busy.”
My chest tightened instantly.
Vivian had always been around Adrian. The media constantly paired them together before our marriage happened, and even after the wedding, rumors about them never completely disappeared.
Now she was standing inside my house while my husband handed me divorce papers.
“It’s fine,” Adrian replied calmly.
The humiliation burned through me immediately.
Vivian’s eyes briefly landed on the papers sitting in front of me before she quickly looked away again. That single glance told me enough.
She already knew.
Maybe Adrian never physically cheated on me, but emotional betrayal still counted.
“How long?” I asked quietly.
Adrian frowned slightly. “What are you talking about?”
“You and Vivian.”
Vivian looked uncomfortable instantly while Adrian’s face hardened.
“You’re being irrational.”
I laughed softly and grabbed the pen beside the papers before my emotions completely embarrassed me. Maybe I should have fought harder, but I was tired. Loving Adrian already felt like losing myself slowly piece by piece.
So I signed.
The moment my signature touched the paper, the room suddenly felt colder than before.
Vivian released a breath beside him while Adrian stared silently at the documents. I waited for regret to appear on his face, but nothing changed.
That hurt the most.
I dropped the pen, grabbed my phone, and turned toward the stairs before either of them could see me crying.
“Elena.”
Hope rose inside me immediately after hearing his voice. Slowly, I turned around and met his gray eyes one last time.
Then he completely shattered what remained of
my heart.
“You should know this before you leave,” Adrian said calmly. “Vivian is pregnant with my child.”
