Chapter 1: The Inheritance
Lyla Dawson had always lived a quiet life, in a modest apartment in the city, working a nine-to-five job as an accountant. Everything she knew was predictable—except for the news that came on an otherwise ordinary Tuesday morning. A letter, sealed with an unfamiliar crest, arrived at her doorstep. It was addressed to her in handwriting she did not recognize, with a name that meant nothing to her—Amelia Nightshade, her aunt. The letter's contents were cryptic: "Lyla, If you are reading this, it means I have passed. I am leaving you everything. You must come to Moonlite Fortune, my home. Your bloodline demands it. Your inheritance awaits, but be warned—the mansion holds many secrets. The past will find you. Trust no one. -Amelia Nightshade" The letter weighed heavily in her hands as she read it over again. Lyla had no memory of her aunt—she hadn't seen her in years. The two had been estranged for as long as Lyla could remember. Amelia Nightshade was a name that carried whispers in the family, but no one spoke of her. Curiosity won over caution, and Lyla booked a flight to the small, isolated town of Moonlite. The journey was long, and as the plane descended toward the outskirts of the town, she noticed the surrounding landscape—dense forests and mountains, shrouded in mist. The town itself looked as if it had been forgotten by time. Cobblestone streets, antique lampposts, and old, faded buildings lined the small streets. There were few signs of life, and even fewer people. Moonlite Fortune awaited her at the edge of town. As Lyla approached, her eyes widened. The mansion was grand, though its once pristine facade was now weathered with time. The ivy that clung to the walls had overtaken the stone, creating a sense of decay. It stood like an imposing structure, its towering spires piercing the gray sky. The door creaked open as Lyla stepped inside. The air was stale, and dust coated the furniture. The grand foyer echoed with each of her footsteps, the emptiness almost deafening. Her fingers brushed over the antique furniture as she moved through the mansion, feeling the remnants of a long era. In the library, she found a stack of journals left behind by Amelia. As she began to read, Lyla quickly discovered that her aunt’s life was far from ordinary. Amelia had been part of a family with strange customs, tied to dark rituals and a prophecy that seemed almost too absurd to believe. "The wolves will come for her. She is the heir, and the bloodline calls. If she leaves, there will be no return." The words burned in Lyla’s mind as she flipped through the journal, searching for more. The warnings were clear: there was something tied to her family, something hidden in the mansion. A family curse? Werewolves? It sounded insane. But deep down, a part of her knew this wasn’t just a story. Suddenly, a sound broke her concentration. A faint scraping noise from the far end of the house. Lyla’s heart skipped a beat. She thought she was alone. She stood still, straining to hear, but all she could hear was the wind rustling through the trees outside. It must have been the house settling, she thought, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched. After a moment of hesitation, she continued her search, flipping through the last few journals. That was when she found the final entry. Amelia’s handwriting was frantic, the words barely legible. "They’re here. The wolves. They know I’m dying. You must leave. This mansion holds too much power. The curse will claim you next. Whatever you do, don’t trust them." Chills ran down Lyla’s spine as she read those words aloud to herself. What was her aunt trying to warn her about? And who were “they”? Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a faint rustling outside the window. Her head snapped toward the glass. A figure stood in the garden, half-hidden by the shadows. It was tall, humanoid, yet there was something distinctly unnatural about it. The figure didn’t move; it simply stood there, staring at her. Lyla’s breath hitched in her throat. The figure didn’t make a sound, but Lyla could feel its presence, as if it were beckoning her to come closer. Unable to tear her eyes away, Lyla slowly moved toward the window, her pulse quickening with each step. She felt her heart pounding in her chest. The figure remained still, but its eyes seemed to glow with an eerie light, piercing the darkness of the night. Lyla’s mind raced. Could this be some kind of joke? Had someone followed her here? But the figure’s gaze was intense, almost hypnotic. She couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of dread. Her thoughts were interrupted when the figure suddenly stepped forward, its movements deliberate and purposeful. The footsteps were silent, but they felt heavy, like something was drawing nearer. Lyla’s breath caught in her throat as the figure moved closer, closer to the front door of the mansion. It was no longer just standing in the yard—it was heading straight for her. With trembling hands, Lyla backed away from the window, her heart pounding faster. She had to act. She had to find out what was happening. But every instinct in her body screamed at her to run—to leave the mansion, to leave the town and never look back. Yet, another part of her felt an almost magnetic pull to the figure. Something was drawing her in. As the figure moved closer to the door, she could see its features more clearly. It was tall, its face partially obscured by shadows. Its eyes were glowing—unnaturally bright, an eerie golden hue that seemed to reflect the light of the moon. The longer she stared, the more she felt her pulse quicken, the air around her growing colder. The figure didn’t speak. It didn’t need to. Then, suddenly, a loud thud echoed through the hallway, as if something—or someone—had just collided with the door. Lyla jumped back, her heart racing, and turned toward the sound. The door trembled with the force of the impact, and the figure outside moved swiftly, vanishing into the shadows once more. The atmosphere in the mansion had shifted. Something was wrong. Lyla’s hands shook as she grabbed the nearest candle, lighting it to steady her nerves. The house seemed alive now, groaning and shifting with an unnatural presence. The air had grown colder, and the shadows deeper. Lyla stumbled backward, eyes scanning the hallway for any sign of the figure. But nothing moved. Suddenly, there was a low growl from behind her. She turned quickly, her heart leaping into her throat. From the shadows at the end of the hallway, two glowing eyes appeared—staring directly at her.
