CHAPTER 39 GRUNER ARRIVES AT the stockade at 0700. He parks the Humvee and goes into the office. “How’s Jones?” “Quiet all night, sir.” In the holding cell, Jones lays in his bunk in almost the same position as last night. This strikes Gruner as strange, and he calls out to him. The prisoner doesn’t respond. He turns to the guard. “Open the door.” The sergeant rushes to Jones, who isn’t breathing. “Damn, has anyone entered the cell?” “No, sir, just you.” “Did anyone check on him in the night?” “The previous shift said he slept through. We did a walk by every hour.” “Call Security Forces and explain we have a body.
