Chapter 6

Roxy I debated going back to my room but decided against it. If I was ever going to learn to manage this, I had to prove I could be around him without crumbling. Rejecting him didn’t feel right, but accepting him was out of the question. Somewhere in between had to exist—a balance I could live with. Shouldn’t be too hard, right? I let my legs carry me to the door he’d said was his, hesitating for a moment before raising my hand to knock. My heart pounded, and I felt a ridiculous surge of nerves. Before I could muster the courage to knock, his deep voice cut through the silence. “Come in, Roxy.” The authority in his tone sent shivers down my spine, and I forced myself to step inside. My breath caught at the sight of his office. It was massive and meticulously organized, just like the rest of the house. Modern furniture filled the space, each piece perfectly placed as if lifted from a designer catalogue. The scent of cedar and something uniquely Ace lingered in the air, wrapping around me like an unwelcome comfort. If Aiden and I ever needed to search through here, we’d have to be incredibly careful not to disturb anything. “How did you know it was me?” I asked softly, not sure why I felt the need to keep my voice low. “I know your scent,” he replied without hesitation, his gaze steady and unwavering. “It’s been etched into my mind from the moment I realized you were mine.” My heart leapt at his words, and my wolf purred in response to his voice. Every fiber of me wanted to melt, to give in, but I couldn’t. He stood, rounding the desk to approach me, but I instinctively stepped back. He stopped short, disappointment flickering in his eyes before he leaned against the edge of his desk. The heaviness of his emotions was almost tangible, and it tugged at a part of me I wished I could ignore. At least he was patient. Many Alphas wouldn’t have tolerated this kind of behavior. “What can I do for you? Are you finally ready to talk?” he asked, his tone laced with hope. I shook my head quickly, avoiding his gaze. “I wanted to go to the gym for a workout, but Calum said I needed your permission.” He flinched, the hurt crossing his face evident. My resolve wavered, but I forced myself to stay firm. I couldn’t let my emotions derail me. His expression shifted as an idea seemed to spark in his mind. “I can take you there,” he offered casually, though there was a note of anticipation in his tone. “No, it’s fine. I’m sure you have work to do,” I said, trying to deter him. “I don’t mind,” he said, brushing my excuse aside. “Nothing’s more important than you. I’ll take you.” “I don’t want you to take me,” I blurted, the words sharper than intended. “Then you don’t have my permission,” he shot back stubbornly, crossing his arms in a way that emphasized his Alpha nature. My eyes narrowed. “Seriously?” His lips curled into a smirk, his hazel eyes twinkling with mischief. “If that’s what it takes, then yes.” “Fine,” I huffed in defeat, unable to stop the small smile that tugged at my lips despite myself. Triumph lit up his face. “Just let me get changed. I’ll meet you downstairs in a minute.” As he walked past me, his arm brushed mine. A wave of tingles shot through my body, making me feel lightheaded. Even after he was gone, I stood frozen, trying to shake the effect he had on me. Alpha Ace was going to be the end of me. I took a moment to scan the office, cursing lowly when I noticed a surveillance camera tucked discreetly in the corner. Perfect. Just one more obstacle to overcome. We’d have to be extra careful during our mission. After a quick look around, I hurried downstairs, hoping to leave before he got back. I technically had his permission, so there was nothing stopping me from heading to the gym. But fate wasn’t on my side. He appeared moments later, dressed in gray sweats and a fitted T-shirt that clung to his broad chest. He looked annoyingly good, and I had to force my mind to focus. “Ready?” he asked, his voice snapping me from my thoughts. “Hm.” He grabbed an apple and two bottles of water before heading out the back door. We walked in silence for a while, though I could tell it was killing him not to talk. “Do you have cameras all over the house?” I asked, breaking the tension. “No. Just in my office. Everything important is kept there, so I had to increase security,” he explained easily. I nodded, relieved he didn’t seem suspicious. As his mate, I had an advantage—he wouldn’t question me the way he might someone else. If I played my cards right, I could use this to complete the mission faster and leave before things got worse. “You have a beautiful smile,” he said suddenly, his voice soft. The unexpected compliment caught me off guard, and I felt my cheeks flush. The smile faded as quickly as it had appeared, the weight of my thoughts crashing back down on me. Was I really going to help my father destroy my mate? Could I live with myself if I used Ace, only to betray him and his pack? It’s just about taking back what’s ours, my subconscious argued. But I knew better. My father wouldn’t stop at reclaiming what was his. He’d want to destroy them entirely. I’d known this all along, but now it felt wrong. Could I really go through with this? I felt like I was suffocating under the weight of my own thoughts. Betray my pack or betray my mate—either way, someone would lose. “Roxy, are you okay?” Ace’s voice broke through my spiraling thoughts. “Yeah,” I lied.
