The First Wind
As the sun started setting out my bedroom window, I could see the colors of the sun reflecting off of the oceans waves. To think that the Spring Winds of Change would be happening in just a few short hours! My pops was ecstatic, since his luck was bad in the Fall. He woke up and stubbed his toe on the bed, foreshadowing the doom that would be coming for the next 6 months. His favorite cat died, his oven exploded right in the middle of the holiday season, and he slipped down the icy stairs causing him to wear a boot on his foot for 6 weeks. The only reason we made it this far was mama and I's good luck. Mom's old friend was visiting in town just in time to fix the oven, and I received an award for my baking which then brought many more travelers to our village for some our family treats. My baking talent has been known for a while in my village but to have surrounding bakers also vote and award me this was a huge deal. "This Spring Winds are going to be in our favor, I can feel it!" I heard dad yell down stairs as the pop of a Champaign bottle went off. I couldn't stop myself from giggling at the ruckus my parents were causing down stairs as they kissed while clinking glasses.  With my 21st birthday last month, I can feel my adventures soul finally wanting to leave the nest and go on my own. My first thing as an adult was cut my hair to my shoulders, which left my mom bawling. I have wanted to cut my hair, but as soon as I did it, I regretted it. But me being my adult self, I didn't let anyone know, I just strutted around like a girl who was a boss. Second order of business is that tonight I am going to watch the Winds and see the magic first hand. This Spring was not any different than any other year, but I could feel something brewing. It was like that feeling when you are getting ready to go on a trip and you know that you forgot something, but for some reason you don't know what? That is the feeling that was hesitating in the air.  "We are heading to bed honey, love you tons," mom whispers as she kisses my forehead. "May luck be in your favor!" Dad tickles me as he hugs me good night. "I love you guys too! We doing a big breakfast in the morning to celebrate our good luck? Maybe waffles...bacon...hashbrowns??" They both roll their eyes and laugh as they close my bedroom door. What can I say, the way to my heart is through my stomach. I laugh right along with them as I refocus out the window. Sitting on the edge of the windowsill I could feel the wind starting to pick up as my brown hair swirled around my head. As the moon started to replace where the sun was, I saw the outline of a ship in the distance. This outline was so far off, I knew it wouldn't be here till morning. Seeing the shadow on the water gave me something to focus on, instead of my watch, as I sat there starting to lean my head on the frame. I was still in my sports bra and overalls with flour splattered in an odd pattern, but I would change in a little bit.  Sitting here was my thinking place, I would come up with my future plans, bucket lists, and how to change the Winds of Change to always be good luck. It was the perfect view over the rooftops to the coastline below, and the reflection of the town and sky in the sea was breathtaking. It had already been an hour, but I had 2 more hours till the magic would happen.  As I reclined more along the edge with one foot hanging out the window, I could smell the bulbs starting to bloom that I planted with mom the other week, and that's when slowly my day dreams shifted into my actual dreams... I could feel the warmth of my oven as I bring out some rolls that are golden brown. As I set them on the cooling rack I can smell how soft they are going to be. I hurry and grab my next tray and put it into the oven as I hip bump the oven door closed. My dad comes in steeling one from the rack as I swat his hand and tell mom to get him out of the kitchen. They are beaming at me with pride and love like they always do. I look out the window and see my sign hanging above the door, 'Eveleny's Haven'. It is a place that people can feel free to be themselves and eat what ever they want without feeling guilty. I hear the squeak of the door to the shop open and close as customers come in, and mentally remind myself to grease that door and also my bedroom door. As I do a little dance step to organize my row of orders, I go to take a roll from the cooling rack when a smell hits me out of no where. It smells like a cleaning product, as my eyes shoot open. All I see is a black gloved hand over my mouth and nose and my windowsill slowly going out of focus. "Help" is all that comes out of my lips and yet it sounds far off, not as loud as I want it to be. Why is my voice betraying me now? But by then I was into darkness...
