Chapter 1
Clara’s P.O.V In the year 2000, on January twenty-second, rain poured down continuously in Mexico City. It was the type of rain that didn't come with wind or thunder; just gentle but non-stop, as if the heavens themselves were weeping. Some would say the sky was mourning the loss of a beloved soul: Helen Maria Stone, the woman who had been like a second mother to me in the tangled world of our families. Beautiful cars, polished to a shine, lined the streets of Colonia San Rafael leading to the cemetery; a testament to the wealth and power of the Stone family, rivals to my own in the shadowed empire of the mafia. The mourners, dressed in black, huddled under umbrellas, dabbing white handkerchiefs at tear-stained faces. My heart ached as we arrived at the prestigious Pantéon Francés, where the elite laid their loved ones to rest. Here, amid neatly trimmed gardens, Helen's final chapter would close. Richard Stone; William's father and the formidable Don of the Scorpiono Mafians stepped forward. A hush fell over the crowd. Tall and commanding, he held a small paper, his voice heavy with sorrow as he began his eulogy. "I stand here today to say a final goodbye to you, my wife, Helen. Yet if I were to make just one wish right now, I would wish that you were here right by my side, as you have always been. But if wishes were horses, even beggars would ride, right?" He chuckled softly, but pain echoed in every word. "I am a man who was blessed to call Helen Maria Stone my wife. She was more than a partner to me; she was my mother, my sister, my friend, and my counselor. She was everything to me. She had a way of soothing my craziest storms, and her words brought comfort to me when nothing else did. Her laughter eased my pain. I was never alone with her by my side. Helen was a blessing in my life, and I know she touched the lives of so many others in the same way." "We grieve her passing, but we also celebrate the gift that she gave to us all. We will never forget the warmth and compassion that she brought to the world." His gaze swept the crowd, lingering on his son; William Stone, only thirteen then, standing tall with eyes brimming with tears he refused to let fall. My young heart twisted seeing him like that; even as a child, William carried a quiet strength that drew me in, a boy caught in the dangerous web of our rival families. He had been my childhood crush that year, even when I couldn’t fully comprehend what love meant. It grieved me to see him witness the loss. And with a heavy heart, I felt even more longingly with a desire for him. I wondered if he noticed me there, hidden among the mourners, my own family ties pulling me into this world of secrets and power. Salvatore Deluca, the consigliere of the Scorpiono Mafians and a man my father often spoke of with wary respect, stood stoically. No tears, but his jaw was set, eyebrows drew together and lines deepened on his forehead; he'd loved Helen deeply, in his silent way. Most mourners were from Richard's side; Helen had few relatives, orphaned long ago. Her brother, John Smith, was missing until he wasn't. "As we stand here today, we remember Helen with love and gratitude. She was a fighter, a woman of strength and courage who faced her illness with dignity. We watched her battle cancer with grace, but its wicked hands prevailed, snatching her away from us far too soon. And though we mourn her passing, we are thankful for the time we had with her. Her laughter, her kindness, her wisdom, and her love will live on in our memories, and in our hearts. May she rest in peace, knowing she was loved…." "Loved? Is that what you call it?" Silence crashed over us as heads turned. John, with two men flanking him, pushed forward, voice raw with fury. "She wasn't loved, you liar! She never should've been with you. Look where she ended up; dead! You Scorpiono Mafians! I warned her to stay away from all of you, but she wouldn't listen. You're responsible for her death!" "You must be delusional, John, to think anyone had a hand in her death. She passed away from cancer. There was nothing anyone could do," Richard countered calmly, though tension rippled through the guards. "Lies! You'll join her too!" John yanked out a gun. Gasps echoed; fear gripped me, but Richard stood unmoved. "You wouldn't want to risk your sister not passing peacefully, would you? Drop the gun now, or you'll regret it." "Let's go, John. We'll settle this another time," one of his men urged. They vanished, and the ceremony resumed, but the air hummed with unspoken threats; the mafia world's dangerous undercurrents reminding me why our families were rivals. William grieved hardest that day, his pain a mirror to the ache in my own heart for the losses our world inflicted. Every year on this date, I felt it too, it reminded me of how fragile love could be in the shadows of power.
