Chapter 3
Dad’s entire face turned upward. His gaze sparkled for a moment and his mouth broke into a smile. Soon after, his eyes wavered and flickered around the room until they landed on Jake. He flexed his fingers backwards and cracked his knuckles while his lips pressed to a thin line. “And you’re the one responsible?”
Jake squared his shoulders. “Yes, sir. I’m the father.”
A vein engorged in my dad’s neck. He looked as if he wanted to wrap his hands around Jake’s throat and throttle him until he was limp and lifeless.
Jake hesitated before he opened his mouth to speak again. “And I’ll do my part and be there for your daughter every step of the way.”
“You sure as s**t will. Chloe got pregnant out of wedlock,” my dad remarked in a serious, flat tone. “How could you let this happen?”
