PROLOGUE – THE NIGHT THE SHADOW WAS BORN
PROLOGUE – THE NIGHT THE SHADOW WAS BORN
The valley writhed, broken, the wind the only noise, a world's death cry. Lightning bled through the night sky, briefly illuminating two figures positioned on opposite edges of a fractured stone platform. Rain, no longer cleansing, stabbed at the earth like the world bleeding itself to death.
One: An old man, withered, fragile.
Two: A young boy. Julian, his name… The old man's breath rasped unevenly, but his eyes were clear-startlingly so for a dying man. "Julian…" The young boy's knuckles were bloodied from the tension in his fists. He said nothing.
His frame trembled, not with fear, but with the immense burden he now carried.
This, reality. Shattered stone, broken blades, broken lives littered the scene-the collateral damage of the clash between those who sought ultimate dominion over the martial world… and those who would prevent it. All, except Julian, lay on the ground in slumber or in death.
The old man took a slow step forward, his voice lowering, a mere whisper. "You wonder why I never trained you to kill, Julian?" Julian's jaw clenched.
Images flooded his mind – training until his muscles burned, pain a constant companion, countless repetitions, and always, always, the mantra: *Your strength is not for yourself.
* "I know," he responded dryly. The old man's lips quirked in a weak approximation of a smile.
"Say it."
Julian's gaze faltered, the rain intensifying its assault.
"Power is not mine to keep," he whispered hoarsely.
"It is mine to give."
The ground rumbled under a roar of thunder, punctuating the silence that followed. The old man's smile… it had a sorrow in it.
"That," he rasped, "is how I used to believe too." He paused.
"I was wrong."
Julian's eyes snapped open, a fissure opening in his impassive facade.
The old man reached into the folds of his tattered robe, his fingers brushing over something hidden. "I refused them," he gasped, his voice catching. Julian's brow furrowed.
"Who?"
The old man's eyes drifted to the raging tempest above.
"Those who wished to e*****e this world. Those who made the path into a throne." His voice grew thinner with each breath.
"They called it balance.
I called it corruption."
A fierce gust of wind whipped through the clearing, swirling around the two figures.
The old man moved closer to Julian.
"They told me if you grew too far, if you awakened truly, no one could ever oppose you." Julian's breathing became shallow, a profound disturbance shaking his core. The old man's intense gaze locked with his. "So they took me instead of ending your life."
Julian froze, the first flicker of genuine fear dawning in his eyes.
"No…" The old man smiled gently.
"It was always me."
For an instant, the world held its breath, the roar of the storm receding to a distant whisper.
Julian stepped forward, his voice finally cracking under the strain.
"Why… why didn't you run?"
The old man looked at him as he might a child seeking a simple truth.
"Because then, you would have come with me."
Absolute silence descended upon the valley. The old man laid a hand on Julian's shoulder; it was warm, surprisingly solid. It still felt like flesh and blood. Still felt alive.
"Listen," he began, his voice now barely a breath carried by the wind.
"When your power finally blossoms, there will be a time the world doesn't ask for your help." A beat passed.
"It will demand your obedience."
Julian's eyes widened, trembling. The old man's grip on his shoulder tightened, just a fraction. "And in that moment…" His breath hitched for a second. "…do not become what they want you to be."
Lightning tore the sky apart, its blinding light briefly etching the old man's features into Julian's mind – serene, peaceful, already gone.
His final words floated to Julian like a specter's sigh. "Use your strength… only to protect what cannot protect itself." His hand went limp. Julian's eyes snapped open.
"Master…?"
Only the wind answered, a hollow, mournful groan. A body sagged to the ground-not defeated, but dissolved into nothing. The man who had been his entire world was gone.
Julian stood there for several minutes, the storm rage about him, the stillness within him absolute. Then, slowly, deliberately, something in his chest broke. And something else, something terrible and magnificent, was born.
He bowed his head, not in grief, but in profound understanding.
"… I will remember."
His voice, now, was clear. Focused. Final.
The wind swirled around him as if responding to his vow.
Julian stood alone in the pouring rain. He was no longer a boy. And in the silence that followed… the Shadow Emperor was born.
