Chapter 1 Heartbreak and New Beginnings
After being cheated on by my boyfriend, I drank myself into a stupor and ended up making out with a stranger during a game.
After breaking up with my live-in boyfriend, I had nowhere to go. I wanted to stay at my best friend's place, but she refused and instead suggested I stay at her brother's house.
Her brother, named Williams, was handsome and treated me well. He even willingly pretended to be my boyfriend to fend off my mom's pressure to get married.
We got along very well. Williams often flirted with me, and there was occasional mild flirtation, but he never crossed the line.
I'm a wedding dress designer, and to my surprise, my new clients turned out to be my ex and his new fling. Luckily, Williams appeared in time to help me out of the situation.
Seeing him being brought home by a strange girl made me feel bitter, but he assertively kissed me.
We naturally got together. After meeting my parents, he wanted to take me to meet his.
However, his parents didn't approve of us. Before they finished speaking, they got up and left. I chased after them to explain, only to find out it was actually a proposal scene he had set up for me.
It turned out Williams had liked me since he was very young. I accepted his proposal, and soon we tied the knot.
When I first met Williams, I always thought he was just a sweet guy. Later, I discovered he was actually a fake puppy, especially at night when he turned into a fierce and sharp little wolf.
Hmm, of course, this mix of puppy and wolf vibes is something that needs to be recalled in detail from six months ago...
Beep beep beep! High sweetness alert ahead!
Six months ago, I went through a rough breakup.
I had been dating my jerk ex-boyfriend for five years, originally planning to get married soon. But then that jerk said he was over me and felt more connected with his childhood sweetheart, kicking me to the curb.
On the night of the breakup, I slapped that jerk hard and then took a cab alone to a street full of bars, standing at the corner and calling my best friend Charlotte.
"Hey, I just broke up! Come out and drink with me!"
At that moment, I felt like the whole world had abandoned me.
Working in a foreign city, breaking up with my long-term boyfriend, I was utterly heartbroken.
Unexpectedly, when Charlotte heard the news of my breakup over the phone, she burst into laughter: "Girl, congratulations on your breakup! I've never liked Jake! He should change his name to Jake the Snake, such a fitting name!"
Her words were quite funny. I was crying my eyes out while yelling, "Stop talking nonsense! There's a bar called Encounter in front of me! Hurry up and come drink with me!"
True to our sisterhood, Charlotte showed up.
I hugged her and cried my heart out, eventually getting completely drunk. By chance, the table next to us was playing a game of Truth or Dare, and caught up in the moment, I jumped in.
"Hey gorgeous, you've drawn a dare! The challenge is that from this moment, the first guy who walks past you, you have to give him a kiss!"
"No problem! I'd be willing to kiss him ten times!" I thought I must have been drunk and lost my senses, as I stood on the sofa, eyes locked on the nearby aisle like a hawk.
At that moment, I saw a young, handsome guy looking over in our direction.
Even though the bar's corner was dimly lit, with the stage lights flashing frequently, making it hard to see clearly, I could tell that this young guy was impeccably handsome.
At the time, I didn't know who he was, but the group of drinking buddies at the booth next to mine started to cheer.
"Hey gorgeous, this cute guy is not bad! Don't back down!"
Hearing this, I looked at the cherry-red, delicate lips in front of me and instinctively swallowed.
"It's you!"
I don't know where I got the courage from, but I quickly rushed over to this cute guy, stood on tiptoe, wrapped my arms around his neck, and kissed him without hesitation.
He had a pleasant floral shampoo scent, and his lips were inexplicably sweet, making me close my eyes involuntarily.
The people around started to cheer.
I could just picture Charlotte's stunned face.
I could also imagine the cute guy's surprise.
So after kissing him for a few seconds, I thought of letting go and apologizing.
Unexpectedly, just as I released my hands, the cute guy wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me in close, and deepened the kiss heavily.
My heart suddenly raced, and as I moved nervously, he gave me a playful bite, leaving me dumbfounded, standing there with cheeks as red as flames.
The cute guy kissed me for over a minute, finally pressing his thin lips to my ear, deliberately blowing warm breath into it.
"Hey gorgeous, you took my first kiss, now you owe me."
I froze, feeling his whole body heating up, and his highly aggressive tone left my mind completely blank.
Before I could explain, I suddenly toppled backward...
Before passing out drunk, I seemed to hear the exclamations of people nearby.
"Whoa, this girl is wild! I said a peck, not a full-on make-out..."
The next day, I woke up in a hotel room.
According to Charlotte, I was too heavy for her to carry, so she took me to the nearest hotel.
Sadly, I blanked out on what happened at the bar last night, only remembering that I had forcefully kissed a guy.
When checking out, I asked Charlotte how the guy reacted.
She said he didn't react.
I wanted to ask if she had his contact information so I could apologize, but she cryptically said I'd find out soon enough, and that was the end of it.
It was probably just a brief encounter.
I endured the headache from my hangover and returned to the apartment I used to share with my ex-boyfriend, the jerk.
The rent was paid by him, and it was a two-bedroom unit with one room serving as my study for fashion design.
But now, I had no reason to stay there, feeling as if my heart had been hollowed out.
"Hey, do you think I could crash at your place for a few days? I know you live with your boyfriend, but I'm homeless now..."
As I looked at the house that was once filled with beautiful memories, I couldn't help but choke up while calling Charlotte.
I didn't want to trouble her; her relationship with her boyfriend was going very well, and they were practically inseparable.
On the phone, Charlotte paused for a moment, said, "Wait for me," and then hung up.
I had no choice but to quietly pack my things.
Jake, to avoid awkwardness, had deliberately gone to his childhood friend's house, not intending to see me at all, making me feel like my years of affection had been for nothing.
Within a few minutes, Charlotte called back: "Hey, you know it's a bit inconvenient for me..."
I replied sadly, "It's fine, I'll ask some other friends."
Charlotte's tone suddenly changed, her voice rising: "But don't worry, my brother Williams just graduated from college this year and bought a place in the city center, a three-bedroom apartment. I asked him, and he said it's just sitting empty, so you can stay there, just pay for utilities."
"That's great!"
"Wait for me, I'll take you to Williams' place."
"Will I be bothering your brother?"
"No, he's just a kid, seven years younger than you, busy with work and games, barely noticing us. Ah, twenty-two, such a prime age."
Calling her brother a prime age? She really is his sister!
An hour later, Charlotte entered the house with me after unlocking it with a password.
A pleasant and sunny voice came from the living room: "Sis, didn't I tell you? Remember to ring the bell when you come to my place!"
Charlotte placed my suitcase by the entryway cabinet: "Hey, I'm your sister! You don't even have a girlfriend, why so many rules?"
"I'm still a grown man!" A young, fresh-faced guy walked out, looking slightly annoyed.
I nervously looked up and saw him wearing a clean, nice white shirt, looking every bit like a freshly graduated college student, with a gentle voice.
When he saw me, his demeanor changed, and his beautiful dark eyes curved into crescent shapes, resembling the purest amber: "Are you the Harper my sister mentioned? Can I call you Harper?"
Especially with his pure and innocent aura, just one glance could make someone inadvertently fall for him.
"Hello..." I tentatively extended my hand.
Williams walked up to me and firmly shook my hand, his clear and magnetic voice as melodious as a cello: "Harper, you're really beautiful."
I felt a jolt of electricity.
This sweet young guy, so charming.
Beside me, Charlotte let out a snicker: "You cheeky brat, this is my best friend, her future is in your hands!"
Embarrassed, I turned my head: "Don't say that..."
"Okay!" To my surprise, Williams agreed readily.
The words were a bit ambiguous, making me blush even more.
Charlotte said her piece and left.
It was just Williams and me in this big house.
"Harper, this is your room."
Williams picked up my suitcase with one hand and walked into the room.
The room he arranged for me faced the sun, designed in a modern minimalist style, clean and tidy, which I really liked.
"Harper, I heard from my sister that you work overtime on designs, so I've already turned the room next door into a study, and there's a new laptop inside."
"Hmm? That was fast!"
I had just made the call, and he had already prepared everything?
And that wasn't all; he had prepared a new set of bed linens in my favorite blue.
He even stocked the bathroom with a new set of cosmetics, the brand I usually use.
I looked around in surprise, feeling a bit strange, as if he had known I was coming all along, even the cups and slippers were in my favorite blue.
He walked over, smiling: "My sister told me."
I hurriedly pulled out my phone: "These must have cost you a lot, let me transfer some money to you, and you should charge me some rent."
Otherwise, I wouldn't feel at ease.
He stepped closer, his smiling face incredibly charming: "No rent, you can help me with some chores, I'm not a fan of folding clothes."
"Oh, okay." I thought there would be plenty of opportunities to discuss this later.
I took my suitcase into my room, and while putting clothes into the wardrobe, a little mishap happened.
I wasn't fully sober yet, and as I stood on a footstool to hang clothes, I wobbled a bit.
Unfortunately, I wasn't tall enough, even on tiptoe, to reach the top shelf.
"Let me help you."
At that moment, a long arm appeared on my right, taking my clothes and effortlessly placing them on the top shelf.
He was very close, and instinctively, I stepped to the side, but that step caused my left foot to slip, and I started to fall.
Williams immediately hooked an arm around my waist, pulling me into his embrace, and I bumped into his chest, clearly feeling his well-defined abs.
"Harper, are you hurt?"
He quickly crouched down, lifted me up, and placed me on the bed, bending down to check my ankle.
I admit I was a bit smitten; he's even more attentive than my ex.
"I'm fine..."
However, his fingers had already started gently massaging me: "How can you be fine? Let me check it out."
What do they say in those dramas?
Never mind the age difference, they'll always treat you well.
I suddenly felt that this puppy-like guy was so warm, and my heart started to beat faster.
Thump thump thump.
Just then, a call came in from home—it was my mom's relentless calls of doom.
"Harper, you're already 29! The kid next door to Aunt Wang is about to have their second child! When are you going to marry Jake? If you don't do it soon, you'll be 30!"
I suppressed my frustration: "I'll try to get married before I'm 30!"
"Let me talk to Jake." My mom's tone was assertive.
Williams seemed to overhear and suddenly spoke up: "You haven't told our mom about us?"
I... was dumbfounded.
What on earth?
On the phone, my mom shouted my name: "What's going on? That's not Jake's voice, is it?"
I weakly replied, feeling guilty: "Mom, I broke up with Jake, you know, Jake the Snake... the person just now was..."
Accidentally, I blurted out the truth.
Williams took my phone with a calm smile: "Hello, Auntie, I'm Harper's new boyfriend."
Great, this time it wasn't just me who was stunned.
My mom was just as stunned on the phone: "Who are you? Let Harper take my video call."
Great, now I'm dumbfounded again.
"Okay, Auntie." Williams smiled and handed the phone back to me.
I waved a fist in front of him: "Are you nuts? Are you trying to get me into trouble?"
Unexpectedly, Williams pulled me to sit on the living room sofa and pointed seriously at my phone: "You should thank me. By pretending to be your boyfriend, I can help you avoid the marriage pressure."
I sat up straight, trying to look serious: "You're so young, my mom won't believe it. Just keep quiet, and I'll explain everything to my mom. At worst, I just won't answer her calls for a while."
"Harper, my suggestion is the best solution. Aren't adults supposed to like the simplest way?" Williams' reasoning was hard to refuse.
Just then, my mom's video call came in again.
I had no choice but to answer.
My mom's first words were: "Let that brat answer the phone, I want to see who has such poor taste."
"Mom! Are you really my mom?" I said with a tone of complaint as I handed the phone to Williams.
As it turns out, I must have been picked up from somewhere.
