A Suprising Meeting
Chapter 1
I felt more like an outsider than a participant as the lively symphony of laughing and clinking glasses filled the room. Holding my glass of wine like it were a lifeline, I stood close to the edge of the throng. I looked about the room trying to find Emma. Promised to be a fun and relaxing evening, she had urged that I attend her birthday celebration. But I had to admit that, standing there among a sea of strangers, I was regretting something.
I repositioned my hold on the glass, the cold surface a sharp contrast to the warmth coming from the crowds. Losing myself in the complex patterns and hues of my graphics had always given me comfort in my job. I felt exposed and vulnerable at social events, though.
Elena, you did it!" Emma's words broke through my thoughts, her broad smile a ray of consolation in the packed room. She gave me a brief hug and her excitement was contagious.
Trying to match her vigor, I said, "Wouldn't miss it for the world." Emma was always my complete opposite—gregarious, endearing, and naturally gregarious. We had first connected a few years ago on a joint project, and her kindness had drew me in like a moth to a flame.
Leaning nearer, Emma's mischievous eyes glittered. Someone I want you to meet. He's running a little late, but I think you'll enjoy him."
I was both curious and nervous as she was snatched away by another buddy before I could answer. I sipped more wine, not much of it helped to ease my anxiety. The door opened and a fresh surge of energy swept into the room as I moved to locate a calmer place.
Josh Bennett. Emma described a tall, self-assured man with an easy smile and a captivating presence, and I recognized him right away. He greeted individuals with sincere friendliness and moved through the throng with a grace that spoke of both confidence and humility.
From my perch, I watched him, drawn inexplicably. His manner, which combined charm and genuineness, was both fascinating and intimidating. He was more than just another attractive face in a room full of strangers—his eyes held a narrative that cried out to be spoken.
I looked away fast after our brief meeting, flushed with humiliation. In what universe was I thinking? Someone like me, shy and introverted and cloaked in insecurities, would never pique the curiosity of a man like Lucas.
However destiny had other ideas. Our paths crossed multiple times over the evening, each time enthralling me more than the one before. Even though he was surrounded by people all the time, he made every one feel special. His capacity for connection and for making people feel seen and heard was admirable.
One of these times Emma came back to my side, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. "I want you to meet Lucas, Elena. Come on."
Heart thumping in my chest, she was guiding me through the throng before I could object. As we got closer, Lucas spun around and grinned broadly at Emma.
There you are, Emma, he whispered in a warm, silky voice. Who then is this?
Emma gave me a little prod forward and said, "Lucas, this is Elena, my incredibly talented friend," "She designs graphics."
Lucas put out a solid but kind hand. "It gives me great joy to meet you, Elena. Emma says you're brilliant."
Under his eyes, I forced a grin, my cheeks flushed. I own the pleasure.
For a little period, the party noise subsided and we were the only two engaged in a quiet conversation. I could see the questions he was asking but not saying. Emma was tugging me away though, saying she would catch up later, before I could even stand up.
Even from a distance, I found myself pulled to Lucas as the evening went on. He had a knack of putting everyone at ease, his laughing a consoling salve among the chaos of the celebration. I was left wondering what it would be like to get to know him better, to cut through the surface and meet the man behind the charm.
My opportunity materialised earlier than I had anticipated. I was on the balcony looking for some alone time as the celebration started to wind down. The glitzy tapestry of city lights that reflected the turmoil in my heart spread out in front of me.
Would you mind if I joined you?" When Lucas's voice pierced the quiet, I looked to see him standing in the doorway, his face friendly and welcoming.
Not at all, I said, my voice more composed than I felt.
He walked onto the balcony, the crisp night air encircling us like a mutually kept secret. For a time we stood in companionable quiet, the city's hum a long way away.
Lucas admitted, "I'm not much of a party person," in a conversational tone. "These are the kind of quieter times I like."
Startled at his admission, I looked at him. For real? You appeared to be quite comfortable there."
He shook his head, a sliver of weakness visible. "Facades are easy to set up. To be honest though, I rather prefer deep talks to banter."
We seemed to be connecting, so I grinned. "That speaks to me."
We spoke easily for what seemed like hours. With his love of technology and creativity clear in every word, he told tales of his startup. I described to him my job and the happiness I took in making designs that touched people's emotions.
An easy silence descended between us as the night grew darker. I found myself staring at him, examining the wrinkles on his face and the way his eyes appeared to contain a million unspoken ideas.
"Elena," he began, his eyes riveted, "I find you fascinating. I feel like there's more to you than first glances, but I can't exactly put my finger on it."
His comments startled me and I experienced a wave of emotions: hope, excitement, and dread. Emma came to the door, her face contrite, before I could answer.
She added, "I need to steal Elena for a moment, sorry to interrupt," her voice frantic.
I turned to Lucas, hoping and regretting at the same time. Lucas, it was good chatting to you.
Promise in his eyes, he grinned. Elena, too. Up until then.
I had a nagging sense that this was just the start as I trailed Emma back inside. I was keen to solve the enigma that was Lucas Bennett; it offered danger as well as thrill.
I had no idea how those events that evening would alter my life forever, sending me on a journey of unanticipated detours where the brightness of newly discovered love would clash with the shadows of the past. And as the evening drew to an end, I couldn't help but sense that this was only the beginning of a trip that would test what I had believed I understood about trust and love.
There was an unidentified sense of expectation when the next day broke. The birthday celebration for Emma stayed with me, every second spent with Lucas playing back like a treasured memory. My phone pinged with an Emma message as I sipped my morning coffee.
I hope you had a good time last night. Lucas enquired about you this morning. He looked genuinely curious.
There was a little skip in my heartbeat and a smile tugging at it. Though I had my doubts, it was clear that getting to know Lucas better sounded good. He drew me in like a moth to a flame.
Just as I was going to reply, another message—this one from an unidentified number—popped up.
Maria, good morning. Luke here. Emma handed it to me. Would you be game to go get coffee later today?"
Mind racing, I gazed at the screen. This was moving more quickly than I had thought, but the excitement of the unknown was too great to resist. Deeply inhaling, I texted back.
Lucas here. How are you? Caffeine sounds fantastic. By when and where?
Setting the time and location for our meeting, his response came almost instantly. As the day progressed, I was anticipating our meeting, excitement and curiosity fighting with my typical fear.
When the moment came, I was nervously approaching the café early. My fingertips fumbling with the edge of my notebook, I settled on a quiet corner table. As the door chimed open, I glanced up to see Lucas walking in, his presence commanding the space even in this informal setting.
When he saw me, he walked over, his warm, real smile. Seeing you again, Elena, is wonderful.
Feeling warm at his easygoing demeanor, I said, "You too, Lucas."
The talk continued as easily as it did the previous evening when we seated and ordered our beverages. Lucas had a way of calming me down, his sincere and natural interest in my life and job.
"You said you're a graphic designer last night," he added, slanting forward a little. "What motivated you to go down that road?"
I paused, enjoying his interest, to gather my thoughts. "Design and art have always drew me in. I use it to communicate ideas and feelings that words sometimes are unable to describe. I also enjoy the difficulty of producing something that people find meaningful."
Lucas gave a nod, a profound comprehension in his eyes. "I see that. You clearly are passionate. Regarding technology and innovation, I share your sentiments. It's "the excitement of making something new, something that might improve people's lives."
I gave a nod, sensed our relationship getting stronger. In our different ways, we both used our talents to effect change and found meaning in our jobs. As we talked, I came to see that Lucas was a person who valued purpose and honesty beneath his polished façade.
The hours passed without our realizing it as we savored our coffee until the early afternoon. We discussed our hopes, anxieties, and difficulties in our different professions. My early concerns were evaporating with every second, to be replaced with a developing sense of comfort and curiosity.
Lucas's phone buzzed on the table just as I was starting to believe this would be the ideal beginning of a new chapter in my life. He looked at the TV, his countenance suddenly tightening from relaxed to agitated.
Everything OK? His manner had changed, so I asked.
A hand swept through his hair as he groaned. "Work is work. Always something demands my attention."
Knowing what a high-pressure job entails, I nodded. "I see now. There seems like there is no way out at times."
A little, appreciative smile was his offering. Exact same. Elena, though, I'm delighted we could accomplish this today. I thought our chat was great."
I said, "Me too," a little excited about the idea of seeing him again.
Lucas vowed to be in touch as we said our goodbyes, so I was left feeling excited and curious about what was ahead. I had no idea that the things our meeting started would quickly take a path I could never have imagined.
