Chapter 1-The Girl Who Watches In The Dark
Rain covered the city like a thin gray curtain. Elara Vale pulled her coat tighter around herself as she stood across the street from the abandoned warehouse. Water dripped from the edge of the rusted roof and splashed into the cracked pavement below. The building looked dead. But Elara had learned something important during three years of chasing ghosts. Dead places rarely stayed empty. She lifted her camera slowly and zoomed in on the second-floor window. A faint glow flickered behind dusty glass. Someone was inside. Her pulse quickened. “Please let this be something,” she whispered. Three years. Three years since her sister Marina vanished without a trace. The police had stopped calling months ago. Friends stopped asking questions even earlier. Everyone had moved on with their lives. Everyone except Elara. She snapped a photograph. The camera clicked softly. Wind swept through the empty street, carrying the distant sound of sirens. Elara lowered the camera and studied the building. Her anonymous source had been brief. One message. One location. One line. If you want answers about Marina, come alone. Most people would have called the police. But Elara didn’t trust the police anymore. Too many files had disappeared. Too many questions had been ignored. If she wanted the truth, she would have to find it herself. She crossed the street. Each step felt heavier than the last. The warehouse door creaked loudly when she pushed it open. Inside smelled of dust and rain. Darkness swallowed most of the room, broken only by a narrow staircase leading upward. Elara hesitated. Her instincts whispered that this was a mistake. But she had ignored that voice before. That was how investigative journalists survived. And sometimes how they died. She climbed the stairs. Each step groaned beneath her weight. At the top of the staircase a long hallway stretched into shadow. At the very end, light spilled from a small office. Her heart began pounding. Slowly she walked toward it. The office door stood slightly open. She pushed it gently. The room was empty. But something waited on the desk. An envelope. Her name was written across the front in neat handwriting. ELARA VALE Her throat tightened. She stepped forward and picked it up. Inside was a photograph. Her hands trembled slightly as she pulled it out. Her breath stopped. Marina. Alive. The photograph showed her sister standing beside a tall man in a black suit. They stood close together. Too close to be strangers. Elara’s eyes shifted to the man. Even in a still photograph he looked intimidating. Sharp features. Dark eyes. Cold confidence. She recognized him instantly. The entire city knew his face. Adrian Voss. Billionaire. Philanthropist. Rumored criminal mastermind. The most powerful man in the city. Elara stared at the photograph in disbelief. Why would her missing sister be standing beside Adrian Voss? Footsteps sounded behind her. Slow. Calm. Controlled. Her heart slammed against her ribs. Elara turned. A tall man stood in the doorway. Rainwater dripped from the shoulders of his black coat. His dark hair was slightly damp, and his expression carried the calm confidence of someone completely in control of the situation. Adrian Voss. In person he looked even more intimidating. Not because of his size. But because of the quiet intelligence behind his eyes. He studied her silently for a moment. Then he spoke. “You weren’t the person I expected to find here tonight.” His voice was low and smooth. Almost gentle. But something about it felt dangerous. Elara forced herself to stay calm. She lifted the photograph. “You know my sister.” Adrian’s gaze flicked briefly to the picture. Then back to her face. For a long moment he said nothing. The silence stretched until it felt heavy. “Yes,” he said finally. The word hit her like a punch. “Where is she?” Adrian stepped into the room. His movements were slow and deliberate. Like someone who never rushed because nothing could threaten him. “Miss Vale,” he said quietly. “You shouldn’t be here.” “I didn’t ask that.” “No,” he said. “You asked where your sister is.” Elara held his gaze. “Yes.” Adrian studied her carefully. As if measuring something. “You’ve been looking for her for three years,” he said. Her stomach tightened. “How do you know that?” A faint smile touched his lips. “You ask many questions about powerful people.” His eyes darkened slightly. “That tends to attract attention.” Elara’s grip on the photograph tightened. “Did you hurt her?” The temperature in the room seemed to drop. Adrian’s expression hardened slightly. “No.” The answer came quickly. Too quickly. “Then where is she?” Adrian looked toward the rain-streaked window. For the first time he seemed almost thoughtful. “If I tell you,” he said slowly, “your life will become much more dangerous.” “It already is.” Adrian looked back at her. Something changed in his expression. Interest. Maybe even respect. Before he could respond— A loud crash echoed from downstairs. Both of them froze. Heavy footsteps followed. More than one person. Adrian sighed quietly. “That was faster than I expected.” Elara felt cold fear spread through her chest. “What was?” Adrian looked directly at her. “The consequences of your curiosity.” The office door handle began to turn. Elara’s pulse raced. Adrian stepped closer. His voice dropped to a whisper. “Congratulations, Miss Vale.” “On what?” His eyes locked onto hers. “You’ve just become the most valuable target in the city.” The door burst open. Three armed men rushed into the room. Everything happened too fast for Elara to process. Adrian moved like lightning. One man collapsed instantly. Another dropped his weapon. The third never had time to react. Seconds later silence returned. Elara stared at him in shock. Adrian wiped blood from his knuckles. Then looked back at her calmly. “This,” he said quietly, “is why I told you not to come here.” Sirens began echoing in the distance. Adrian grabbed his coat. “Come with me.” Elara hesitated. “Why would I trust you?” Adrian opened the window. Cold rain poured into the room. He looked back at her. “You shouldn’t.” Then he jumped. Elara stared down into the dark alley below. Her heart pounded. Somewhere inside the building more footsteps were coming. She cursed under her breath. Then she followed the most dangerous man in the city into the night. And without realizing it— Elara Vale had just stepped into a war that had been waiting for her for years.
