The Wolfless Bride
Chapter One: The Wolfless Bride Kate’s POV I learned at an early age that silence was safer than asking questions. The night my parents died, the pack elders . told me fate had chosen this for them. They said it calmly, like they were talking about the weather. My mother’s body was pulled from the river at dawn, her fingers still holding a piece of my father’s torn jacket. He was found hours later, broken against the rocks at the base of the cliff. Rogue attack, they claimed.I was fourteen when I lost my parents . I was too young to understand pack politics, but old enough to know when truth was being buried alongside the dead. After that night, everything changed. Our house was taken.Friends became distant. Pity followed me like a curse. Wolves who once smiled at me now avoided my eyes. My parents had been ordinary wolves, not powerful, not influential. Their deaths made me invisible. To make it worse. At sixteen, the other wolves shifted. At seventeen, they all found mates. At eighteen, they earned respect and a place in the pack while I stayed the same. No wolf, no mate and no sign of power. By twenty four, the whispers stopped being quiet. She’s broken, a curse she is wolfless and Useless. Some said my parents’ deaths had cursed me. Others said I wasn’t a real wolf at all. That I should be sent away before I became a burden the pack could no longer afford. That was when the Alpha’s brother offered marriage. Not out of love or desire. But a means to stop the rumors and give me protection. I said yes before they could change their minds. Even though I have no idea why he asked me to marry him . I just know the benefits the wedding comes with. The wedding was small, cold, and fast . No celebration. No joy. Just an exchange of vows that felt more like a contract. My husband barely looked at me as he placed the ceremonial mark on my wrist. His touch was polite. He never asked me into his bed.I never asked why.Being unwanted was familiar. Being safe was not.I took the safety. The courtyard was filled with life as I crossed it that morning, my hands folded neatly in front of me. Wolves laughed, trained, argued. Their scents filled the air, rich and powerful. I still smelled like nothing. A few heads turned. Some with curiosity.Others with open disdain. The Alpha’s wolfless sister-in-law.I always pretended not to notice. My steps slowed down when I sense his presence . Conversations stopped immediately and Wolves became stiff with respect and fear. I knew who it was without looking. My brother-in-law.The Alpha of the lynx pack . He was everything my husband was not. He is Dangerous, Dominant and Feared by everyone in the pack. I kept my head lowered, my heartbeat increasing as I tried to walk pass him without drawing attention. “Watch where you’re going.” His voice stopped me cold. “I’m sorry,” I said quickly, eyes on the ground. A pause followed. I felt his eyes studied me “You smell different,” he said. I immediately panicked . “I’m not feeling well.” Another pause. Then, “Go.” I didn’t hesitate. I walked away without looking back. Only when I reached the edge of the courtyard did I realize my hands were shaking. I told myself it was nothing. It had to be nothing. Later that night, the moon refused to let me sleep . It was a full moon . Its light poured through the window, My bones hurt like hell . Not again, I begged silently.Every year, there was a night like this. Full of Pain, Hope and Then disappointment. But this time, the pain didn’t fade. I screamed as my body arched violently. Heat builds up through me, raw and uncontrollable. My bows cracked and my limbs twisted. I clawed at the floor, nails tearing wood as something ancient and furious woke inside me. The shift was painful . No mercy. Just fire and bone and ripping through me until I thought I might die from it. Then suddenly Silence follows I lay on the floor, my heart beating fast . My vision cleared slowly, the world sharper, brighter. I stared at my hands which had turned to Paws.Golden fur fills my body shiny bright under the moonlight.“I have a wolf,” I whispered. I wasn’t broken. I wasn’t cursed. I had just been waiting. Then a scent hit me.it was the most amazing scent I have ever smell It was Dark ,Commanding and somewhat Familiar. My wolf snapped to attention, screaming a single word that echoed through my mind . Mate. Then the door burst open. He stood there, eyes glowing, breath uneven, his control on the edges. For a heartbeat, neither of us moved. Then he inhaled sharply. “No,” I breathed, backing away, my wolf shaking beneath my fear. His eyes locked onto mine, fierce and determined. “You shifted,” he said, voice rough. “Yes,” I whispered. “But this is wrong.” He took a step forward. “I’m married,” I said desperately. “To your brother.” His jaw tightened. The bond flared between us, hot and undeniable. “You were wolfless,” he said slowly. “Until tonight.” Tears slid down my face. “Please.” He stopped inches away, fists clenched like he was holding himself back from something monstrous. “I will not touch you,” he said. Relief filled in my chest for a moment .Then he leaned closer, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. “But fate has marked you as mine. And fate does not take rejection kindly.” My wolf bowed instinctively to his . I realized then that surviving without a wolf had been the easy part. But surviving a ruthless mate would cost me everything.
