Chapter 1 My Husband's Affair
"Mrs. Cruz, Mr. Cruz is currently in an important meeting. Please wait a moment." I was stopped by my husband's personal assistant, anxiety and confusion welling up inside me. 'At this time, his schedule says he's handling paperwork, so how could he be in a meeting? And besides, my mother's condition can't wait. I need to see Jack immediately.' "I need to speak to Jack. It's urgent. My mother..." I tried again, but a burst of flirtatious laughter from inside the room interrupted me, sending a chill down my spine. "Oh, Jack, you're amazing. I've never had such a perfect experience with any man before..." "Babe, you're incredible too." The familiar voices came from behind the door, along with the faint sound of bodies banging together that left little to the imagination. The assistant stood awkwardly, his face flushed with embarrassment as he avoided eye contact with me. "Mrs. Cruz, please, it's better if you leave." I felt the cold dread seep into my bones, my hands trembling. The two voices behind that door belonged to my husband, Jack, and my best friend, Vivian. My stomach churned as realization hit me. 'When did they start this affair? And here they were brazenly carrying on in his office.' Their actions were the ultimate betrayal... But I couldn't let pride make me leave now. I had something far more important to do. Taking a deep breath, I shoved past the assistant and knocked firmly on the office door. "Lucy, I'm busy with something important. Can't you see? Come back later!" Jack's voice came from within, laced with irritation and heavy breaths. I kept knocking, relentless and unwavering. Eventually, the noises inside ceased, followed by the sound of clothes being adjusted, and the door swung open with a clatter. Jack stood in front of me, flushed and breathless, his features betraying a flicker of panic. The moment I saw him, a wave of disappointment and pain washed over me. Jack's eyes flickered with panic when he saw me, but then, as if flipping a switch, he sneered with a smug laugh. "Why are you here? Shouldn't you be home cleaning or something? You don't usually come by the office." "I heard Vivian was visiting, so I thought I'd drop by." My voice was cold and steady. "Oh, yeah, Vivian just put together an absolutely perfect tax plan for me. You should thank her for being so considerate." Jack swung the office door wide open with a careless shrug, revealing the scene behind him. What should have been a pristine desk was now a mess, papers scattered everywhere like the aftermath of a chaotic storm, each out-of-place object a reminder of their indiscretion. My gaze landed on the blonde woman beside him, a wave of nausea churning in my stomach. Vivian still wore that impeccably professional smile. They just stood there, calm and unfazed, as if I were beneath their notice. "Anna, ever since you got married, you've rarely contacted me. I would've invited you for a shopping spree if I’d known you had time. We haven't caught up in ages. Oh, right, you'd need Jack's permission now that you're not working anymore, right?" Vivian smiled, throwing Jack a flirty glance. "Jack, as a good husband, you'd pay for your wife's shopping, right?" "Of course." They continued making fun of me, trading casual banter like I was invisible. Jack had long since abandoned any sense of loyalty to our marriage, lost in the glitter of his high-society lifestyle. Our relationship had become nothing more than a hollow shell, with me clinging to a fantasy of a marriage that no longer existed. But at that moment, my heart shattered, and the reality of my situation hit me. I finally saw things clearly. 'A woman who relies on a man for everything will never have a happy ending, and I was no exception.' Suppressing the anguish rising in my chest, I forced myself to speak, "My mother is ill and needs treatment. I need your secondary credit card." Vivian chuckled softly. "Anna, you used to be such a proud, promising scientist. How did you end up having to ask your husband for money? As women, the most important thing is building our own careers and achieving financial independence." I stayed silent, burning her words into my memory. My best friend was mocking my deepest struggles, and I would never forget this moment. "Well, what can I do? I'm Anna's husband. Honey, here you go." Clearly enjoying the exchange, Jack reached into his jacket and pulled out his credit card. With a casual flick, he tossed it in my direction. The card hit me square in the face before clattering to the floor, his throw rough; intentional or not, I couldn't tell. Their synchronized laughter followed. "Oops, sorry about that. Didn't mean to throw it so hard," Jack said, not even bothering to sound sincere. I stared at the card on the floor, bent down, and picked it up, my teeth gritted. "It's fine." I looked up at Jack and Vivian one last time, my expression icy, and then turned and walked out of the office. I shut the door behind me, but I didn't leave. Instead, I pressed myself against the wall just outside, the assistant looking at me in shock as I eavesdropped. ***** Inside the office, Vivian draped herself over Jack, one arm circling his waist while her other hand slowly unbuttoned his shirt, tracing circles on his chest. Their bodies grew warmer, desire thick in the air. Vivian whispered into his ear, her breath hot, "Why even give her the money? Wouldn't it be better to make her suffer a bit? Get the divorce done sooner," Vivian murmured, her lips grazing his ear. Jack chuckled. "The secondary card only has a limit of twenty grand. If she needs more, she'll have to come back to me. The divorce papers are already drawn up. When it's all over, she'll be left with nothing." "Clever man, I like that." Vivian laughed, admiration glowing in her eyes. Jack grinned wickedly, giving Vivian's hip a playful slap. They were back at it, bodies entwined, heat rising in the room. I kicked the door open with a bang, startling them both. Jack yelped in pain, apparently hurt somewhere sensitive. I inwardly cursed him with eternal impotence, coldly laughing as I said, "I recorded your little tryst, Jack. I'm officially filing for divorce! And I'm taking my half of everything you own."
