Chapter 14:
Alex carried Diamond upstairs, Julia following closely behind. He pushed open a door, revealing a cozy bedroom with a plush bed and a sunny window seat.
"This will be your room," Alex said, setting Diamond down. "You two can rest for a bit. I'll come get you when dinner's ready."
Julia helped Diamond onto the bed, where she snuggled under the blanket, her eyes still red from crying. Alex handed Julia a box of tissues.
"I'll talk to Lucas," Alex said, his voice firm. "He'll apologize and make things right."
Julia nodded, her eyes grateful. "Thank you, Alex. For everything."
Alex smiled and closed the door behind him, his mind already turning to the conversation he'd have with Lucas. He took a deep breath, preparing himself for what was sure to be a difficult talk.
Alex stood outside Lucas's door, his hand hesitating on the knob. He took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts before entering. Lucas lay on his bed, his face turned away, his body language defiant.
"Lucas, we need to talk," Alex said, his voice firm but calm.
Lucas didn't respond, his silence a clear indication of his refusal to engage.
"Lucas, what you did was unacceptable," Alex continued. "You hurt Diamond's feelings and made her cry. You need to apologize."
Lucas finally turned, his eyes flashing with anger. "I don't see why I have to! They're just going to leave like everyone else!"
Alex's expression softened, understanding the pain behind Lucas's outburst. "That's not true, Lucas. Julia and Diamond need our help, and we're going to support them. You can make a difference in their lives."
Lucas scowled, but Alex saw a glimmer of uncertainty. "Apologize to Diamond, Lucas. It's the right thing to do."
