CHAPTER THIRTEEN

1270 Words
Naomi never understood why Ruby was adamant in speaking to Stephan. It was a fact that he was a billionaire and money for Ethan’s chemo wouldn’t put a dent in his mountain of wealth. “Naomi I thought we decided to raise Ethan without Stephan’s interference or input” Ruby was scared Stephan would accuse her of being a gold digger “I know we agreed but this is life-threatening and I can’t just sit back and do nothing. If you don’t want to approach him it’s fine but please don’t stop me from approaching him” a hint of frustration evident in Naomi’s voice. Ruby’s eyes glistened with unshed tears as she watched Naomi speak with such conviction. She knew deep down that Naomi was right, that they had to do whatever it took to save their son. Reluctantly, Ruby nodded and reached out to gently grasp Naomi’s hand “You are right,” Ruby whispered her voice filled with a mix of recognition and determination. “You can approach him once, if it doesn’t go as planned we will never reach out to him again “Sure,” Naomi said. She was determined to force Stephan if she had to but he must take responsibility for Ethan. She left the hospital to prepare for her search for Stephan, since there was no contact information, she had to go to the Grand Hotel to find him. On arriving at the Hotel, the receptionist recognised her, he put up a friendly smile, unlike the last time they were here. “Hello, good to see you again” “Same here,” Naomi said “So did you find your friend’s mystery man” he curiously asked “That’s why I’m here” Naomi began. She moved closer to the table and lowered her voice in a whisper “We found him and he happens to be your big boss” she said pointing upwards “My big boss? And who might that be?” The receptionist asked confusedly “Stephan Rodriguez” Naomi whispered The receptionist’s eyes widened in surprise. Stephan Rodriguez was not only his boss but also a man of great influence and power. The thought of Naomi approaching him, an ordinary receptionist, made him nervous. “Ma'am are you sure about this?” he asked, his voice shaking slightly. “Stephan is not someone to joke with.” Naomi nodded, her determination unshakeable. “I understand the risks, but this is for the sake of my friend and her son, I have to try.” Having heard all this, the receptionist sighed a bit and leaned closer. “I can make no guarantee, but I may be able to assist you,” he whispered cautiously. “Stephan often stays in the penthouse suite on the top floor. It won’t be easy to reach him, but I can give you a key card that’ll grant you access to that floor.” Naomi’s heart raced with hope. She hadn’t expected such assistance from a stranger. “Thank you,” she said gratefully. “I truly appreciate your help. I’ll forever owe you a favour if this works out.” The receptionist looked around carefully, making sure no one could hear their conversation. “Just be careful, Naomi,” he warned in a low tone. “Stephan is known for his unpredictability. If he suspects anything, it could end badly for both of us.” Naomi agreed that the situation was of great importance. She hurriedly tucked the key card in her pocket and adjusted herself by subtly keeping up with the other hotel guests. With each step she took towards the elevators, Naomi felt a combination of joy and also fear. Although the situation was critical, she would do whatever it took to guarantee that Ethan was safe and healthy. The trip up the elevator seemed to last forever as her mind spun with many thoughts of what lay in store on that particular floor. As the doors finally opened, she walked out of the elevator and into an ostentatious corridor that screamed wealth. As she was still admiring the hallway, she could feel intense gaze behind her staring as if it intended to bore a hole behind her head. She turned around to find the sharp gaze and there stood Stephan Rodriguez in flesh and blood. “Go-good morning,” Naomi tried to comport herself but Stephan looked intimidating. She was sure of it weren’t for the alcohol, Ruby would be running in the opposite direction from this man. “Who are you and how did you get here” his question snapped Naomi back to her senses “My name is Naomi Collin and I am here to speak to you” Naomi boldly said trying to push down her fear “I don’t know you and you still haven’t answered my second question, how did you get here?” Stephan asked impatiently. His security was paramount and he would not tolerate any lapses “What I have to say is very important” Naomi kept on pressing “You better leave here before I call security on you and also fire whoever gave you access to this floor” Stephan spoke with authority as he turned his back to leave “My friend has a baby for you, he is sick and needs help” Naomi shouted in one breath, she couldn’t risk this opportunity as she might not get the chance again. The statement stopped Stephan on his heels. He turned around to face Naomi and then started laughing. “Is this a joke or something?” He asked seriously “Well I’m not laughing, My friend Ruby you guys met at Zen nightclub a couple of months ago and you brought her here, I could show you a picture to jog your memory”. Naomi quickly brought out her phone and began searching for a recent picture of Ruby. When she found it, she handed the phone over to Stephan. He stared at the phone interestingly and of course, he recognised the lady from the picture, he enjoyed every bit of her company and dreaded the morning when he had to leave her but he did it to avoid scandal. What if the baby isn’t his? what if the lady and her friend were trying to pull a fast one on him? Questions kept turning over in his head. “What proof do you have to show the baby is mine and what did you say was wrong with him” Stephan queried. If the baby was truly his and needed his help, he needed to know “He has Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and he requires chemotherapy but my friend and I can’t afford that now that’s why I’m here and for the proof you seek, you can carry out a DNA test to prove my claim,” Naomi said. She prayed and hoped Stephan would believe and follow her to the hospital “How old is he?” “Three months and two weeks” “He is so little,” Stephan wasn’t heartless enough to abandon a sick baby “Fine, I will go with you to the hospital to pay for his treatment and then I get to choose the hospital for the DNA test to avoid scam. If the baby is not mine, you will pay dearly” he threatened “And if he is yours?” Naomi asked “I will take responsibility for him” Stephan said as he walked to the elevator with Naomi in tow.
