Chapter 6: Big Plans and small plans

1652 Words
After what seemed like days I woke up, and we were still in the forest but there was a blanket over me. I looked around and spotted a wagon, within a brief moment I then heard quite the large screech in the forest, a fight was going on and I made my way there as to assess the situation. When I reached the battle ground I saw what looked like bandits tired out from fighting for their lives and my sister dissecting a poisonous mushroom monster, I was confused at the situation and had zero clue as to what was going on. "Yua!?" She stops dissecting to look at me, she give a big small grin and a wave. After everyone had rested a bit and eaten the freshly made wild mushroom soup my sister explained the situation to me. So these guys are mercenaries, not bandits. They offered to help us get to the nearest town and provide us protection against the monsters so that we can rest properly. The closest place to us was called Allestine and it was the third richest country in this continent, they have an adventurers guild where we can earn a living by doing jobs of varying difficulty and occupations, my sister wants us to get money to buy gear and set off to a place to give me proper fight training, after we have enough experience in Allestine we will be on our way to kill the beast that ripped our family and village into multiple pieces. We had a week more of travel to do and that allowed me to get to know the mercenaries a bit more. There were three of them in total, Alecs is a paladin who prioritises our defence. Lily is a thief who steals monsters weapons and money from the rich from time to time her hair was the same blood red as mine. And Buojer is a knight who used to work for a noble, but left due to some shady trades that the nobleman was into. They get requests mostly from people who are adventurers, as to protect them when on a monster hunting quest and occasionally get special request from nobles or important clients. Monsters are really dangerous the closer to the city as the population is quite large, so we were advised to hire people or work in a party if we thought of leaving the city, for our own safety. Parties are a group of people who pair up together either long term or short term to complete quests or go on journeys. I asked Yua about it and she said she wants to hire a strong person or convince a strong person to join our party. "ONLY ONE?!" She shuts my mouth abruptly, she wants to keep the fact that we use magic a secret so she's keeping our numbers small, we may be exploited into some shady business and be forced to be on the run, she hasn't even shown the mercenaries yet as well. I'm glad she's starting to show signs of maturity as I can't keep up the act of a child for much longer, it will make getting by a lot easier. "I'm only going to get one person because I can't always protect you with my sword alone, so it would be best to have one more person as it'll be easier to watch each other's backs," she tells me with a serious look in her eyes. I understood so I nodded my head only noticeable from a close distance. My sister is getting more cautious about our safety so I'll put more focus on our finances and lodging when we get to Allestine, it's the least I can do as she is really taking initiative into taking care of me. And what felt like a nice smooth trip we made it in one piece, the place was huge filled with houses you'd see in old fantasy movies, people all over, a market place with more goods than the eye can see and so much more. The mercenaries left us at the entrance with some useful information to how the town works, there is a place called a guild hall and we can sign up there to apply for job requests that can range from babysitting to clearing high concentrated monster areas. There are multiple inns so lodging can be found pretty easily, there is a market place with high quality gear for really cheap in this one shady looking area of the market place that Lily told us about. We parted ways with the mercenaries and my sister was immediately lost on what we should do. "Eeeerm... let's get some errr...food! and... f-find some place to sleep t-th-then we'll get a job to get some gear," she says stumbling over her words at every given chance. She may be taking initiative but she is still much younger than me mentally. "Yua, let's first go apply to the guild for a well paying job then get food and lodging as we need money to do that stuff, I'll manage the money stuff you focus on protecting us from danger," I say to her letting her know that I'm going to be taking charge of our finances. In my old life I started working at a young age, spending many hours paying bills, studying, looking for my next job, calculating costs. It was tough and I had no entertainment so I spent the rest of my time studying. We later got some directions from one of the locals and arrived at the guild house, there are very unique races here, like beastmen, elves, dwarfs and more. I didn't see any in town as we were focused on sorting out a plan. This sight really showed me that this is most definitely a fantasy world, also the money in this world is surprisingly light, my parents have shown me the money before so I have a rough understanding on how it works. We got to the receptionist and we signed up. My sister wrote swordsman as her as an occupation and I wrote thief as mine since I use a knife to fight with, we needed more requirements to fill out in order to get an adventurers card. We were guided to the testing area to begin our rank selection. The rank system is simple to understand. Gatherer, silver, emerald, adventurer and high adventurer. Then there are ranks above high adventurer to show the best adventurers but it was said that only 1 person had achieved that rank, but they went missing 10 years ago. But that not important right now, we need to pass the test and receive our rank, we can't use our magic so it'll be based on our raw combat skill. The way the test works is we are taken to a large underground fighting cave, then they bring out monsters of different difficulty from low to high and we are tasked to defeat them, there are supervisors there to ensure we don't die during the test. I was able to defeat the first two levels but the third one had a wolf that was very agile and I couldn't do anything against it. I was moved to another room to get my adventure card, I got the rank silver as my combat ability is fairly weak, the card can serve as a form of ID in most countries as it has all the necessary information to go from capital to capital. When I got to the reception there seemed to be a commotion going on, there were people standing by the testing room that I left not too long ago. Curious as I was I asked a nearby beastman what was going on and he said "Seems like we might have a high tier fighter joining the guild, they're clearing all the levels with such extreme yet elegant moves!!" The only people I knew who met the criteria of "extreme yet elegant" was none other than my sister. I ran to the front to see Yua flying across the room with her light footwork, only she knows this technique as mom didn't teach it to anybody l. So everyone was captivated by this grand display. When my sister finished her last fight, a big man who looked human but had dog like ears on his head, a fluffy tail, he had scars all over his body and only a right eye with a scar over where his left eye should be, he was built very tough and big and had a fearsome aura to him. He walked up to Yua, sensing the intense aura she flys across the room taking a battle stance once again. The air was suffocating. The dense aura emanating from this guy was enough the put everyone in the room at a fighting or a stance to run away if things got ugly. The man speaks in a proud brutish voice, "you. Girlie, what's your name, age and occupation?" My sister stays silent and as her guard was still up, she was like a tiger facing a killer dragon. "Hahahaha, your an interesting one, just so you know if we fought I wouldn't stand a chance against you. My name is Akifumi, I am the guild master for this here place. Upon request of the king, whoever completes the series of tests must have an audience with him." The attention my sister has drawn to herself will soon reach the ruler of this land, but why would a king want someone like us just for defeating a few monsters? I was allowed to go with her to the palace but I wasn't allowed to hear what they spoke of in the kings thrown room. But I now my sister will put us first before this country. I hope at least.
