"I don't understand," Wren said, her voice barely audible over the hum of the air conditioner. "Why are you here?" Reid stepped in, opening his briefcase to reveal a thick stack of aged legal documents tied with a faded red ribbon. "Mr. Ashford holds a binding legal document drafted by his late grandfather over a decade ago. It concerns your father.” Wren sat down at the edge of her wooden desk. The polished surface felt cold against her palms. She stared at the two men standing in her cramped office. "My grandfather made a promise before he died," Callum said. His voice was deep and steady, cutting through the heavy silence of the room. "Years ago, your father gave up his stake in a shared venture to save Ashford Holdings from collapsing. My family owed him a debt that was never repaid." Reid flipped open the leather briefcase and slid a heavy document across the desk. "The agreement states that if the Calloway family ever fell into financial ruin, the Ashford name must step in," Reid explained. "Callum is here to honor that obligation." Wren looked down at the aged paper. Her father's signature sat at the bottom in his familiar, sloping handwriting. She remembered her father coming home late at night, exhausted, talking about a ruined partnership that broke his heart. He never spoke ill of the Ashfords. He just moved on, carrying the weight of his losses in silence. "You want to pay off the foundation debts?" Wren asked, looking up at Callum's piercing blue eyes. "Every single cent," Callum replied without missing a beat. "The loans, the back taxes, the utility bills. The foundation will be fully funded by tonight." Wren felt a rush of relief wash over her chest, but it vanished the second Callum continued. "But on one condition." "Which is?" Wren whispered. "You will marry me." "That is insane," Wren stood up, her chair scraping loudly against the linoleum floor. "You want me to sell my life so my father's office stays open? I am not a piece of property you can buy off a shelf." "There is no deception here," Callum said, holding her gaze. "You will have your privacy ,no one will disturb you and you will have your own space in my home. There will be no pressure beyond the public expectation of a husband and wife." He stood up, towering over the small desk. Reid carefully closed the briefcase and placed a fresh copy of the marriage agreement next to the old documents. "You have forty-eight hours to read the terms," Callum said, turning toward the door. "My office will expect your answer by then." Wren watched them walk out of the office and disappear down the hallway. She stood frozen in the quiet room, the heavy contract glaring back at her.
