CHAPTER 1 — THE MAN WHO SHOULDN’T EXIST
. . . Zara Sterling didn’t look up when the boardroom doors opened. She didn’t need to. Power had a sound. Measured footsteps. Controlled breathing. The kind of silence that demanded attention without asking for it. And this man? He carried it like a weapon. Still, she kept her eyes on the document in front of her, flipping a page with deliberate calm. “Miss Sterling,” her assistant whispered nervously, “he’s here.” Zara’s lips curved slightly. “Let him wait.” A bold move. A dangerous one. But Zara Sterling didn’t build a billion-dollar empire by playing safe. The room fell into a tense silence, thick enough to choke on. Every executive seated around the long glass table shifted uncomfortably. No one dared speak. Then— A chair scraped against the marble floor. He sat. Not across from her. Not beside her. At the head of the table. Zara’s pen paused mid-signature. Slowly… she looked up. And for the first time, she saw him. Adrian Cole. He was exactly what she expected—and worse. Sharp jaw. Cold eyes. A face built for control, not kindness. His suit was perfectly tailored, like everything about him had been designed to intimidate. And it worked. Just not on her. Their eyes locked. The air changed. No greeting. No smile. No courtesy. Just war. “So,” Adrian said, his voice low, smooth, dangerous, “you’re the woman who’s been trying to block my acquisition for the past six months.” Zara leaned back in her chair, crossing her legs slowly, deliberately. “Trying?” she echoed, unimpressed. “That’s a strong word for someone who’s been failing.” A sharp inhale circled the room. Someone coughed. Someone else pretended to check their phone. But Adrian? He smiled. Not warmly. Not kindly. Like a man who had just found something interesting to destroy. “I don’t fail,” he said simply. Zara tilted her head, studying him now. Up close, he was more dangerous than the rumors suggested. Not just because of his power—but because of the calm way he carried it. Men like him didn’t shout. They ended things quietly. “That’s funny,” she replied coolly. “Because from where I’m sitting, you’ve been losing.” Silence. Then— A soft chuckle. Adrian leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table, eyes never leaving hers. “You think this is a game.” Zara’s expression didn’t change. “I know it is.” Another pause. Longer this time. He reached into his briefcase and slid a file across the table toward her. “Then let’s change the rules.” Zara didn’t touch it immediately. She let it sit there. Untouched. Unacknowledged. A power move. Finally, she picked it up, flipping it open with slow precision. And froze. Just for a second. But he saw it. Of course he did. Adrian Cole didn’t miss anything. Inside the file was a document stamped with one word: MERGER. Her company. His company. Forced. Signed and approved at the highest level. Impossible. Zara’s fingers tightened slightly against the paper before she closed the file. When she looked back up, her expression was calm again. Too calm. “You went over my head,” she said quietly. “I went above everyone’s head,” Adrian corrected. Her eyes hardened. “That was a mistake.” “No,” he said, leaning back, completely at ease now. “This… is inevitability.” Zara held his gaze, something colder settling beneath her skin. She had spent years building her empire from nothing. Every deal. Every risk. Every sleepless night. And now— This man thought he could walk in and take control? No. Not happening. “You don’t get to walk into my company and take over,” she said, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. Adrian’s smile returned. Slow. Confident. Infuriating. “I already did.” The words hit like a challenge. Like a promise. Like a war declaration. The room felt smaller now. Tighter. Like the walls themselves were watching. Zara stood. So did he. They were close now. Too close. Close enough to see the fire in each other’s eyes. Close enough to feel it. “You have no idea who you’re dealing with,” Zara said, her voice low. Adrian stepped closer. Just enough. “I was about to say the same thing.” A beat. Then— “Welcome to the merger, Miss Sterling,” he added softly. “Try not to lose everything.” Zara smiled. Not sweet. Not polite. Dangerous. “If I lose,” she said, stepping even closer, her voice barely above a whisper, “I won’t be the only one going down.” For a split second— Something flickered in his eyes. Interest. Real interest. And that? That was the first mistake. As Zara walked out of the boardroom, heels echoing against the floor, one thing became clear: This wasn’t just business anymore. It was personal. And somewhere behind the glass walls of power and control… Something had just begun. Something neither of them would be able to stop.
