Chapter 3
OLD LIFE AND SURPRISES
Melissa Fernando
Another boring day. But another chance to repair the wrongs from yesterday. There are moments in your life when you don’t know what you have to do anymore, but that’s life and we have to face it.
That is exactly what is happening to me at this exact moment. I don’t know what to do. I have still been debating for the past few hours if I should go and face reality or not.
Finally, I decided to call Demy Moore. She’s the only one who can help me right now if she isn’t busy studying.
I met Demy Moore at a college in Canada. I was lost during my first day and was ready to cry, but luckily Demy appeared like an angel from above sent to help me. Since that day, we have been best friends.
Well, she’s my best friend from college, but Kerry will be my best friend forever. No one can replace her. We departed from each other when she went to Seattle for college.
Kerry is a nerd, a bit reserved and not the funny type, but she’s a perfect friend. She...
Knock-knock
Well, I think Demy Moore is already at my doorstep. “Hey, you said you needed me urgently, what happened?”
“Oh yeah, about that, come in.”
Demy had always been the one who gets antsy quickly. That’s just her over-caring personality and she’s who you call selfless.
“It’s about my mother, you see-”
“Oh no, not again, what did she do now?” Demy Moore groans, stumbling on my bed lazily.
“Clearly, the day still hasn’t come when someone will actually be fond of my darling so-called mother apart from her dear husband. You know it’s her birthday after four days and she wants me to come back to New York.” Demy’s eyes widened, her jaw practically dropping to the floor. If I wasn’t in this situation, I would have laughed at her expression.
“Well “Wh-at- what do you mean back to the states?! Your job is here and all. I don’t understand how..?”
“I know, but well, that’s my mother for you, she doesn’t care about all this, she just wants me to be there.”
My mother is a complex woman. I’ve spent eighteen years of my life with her and I still understand her.
Now I’m going to see her after 3 years. I’m sure she hasn’t changed one bit.
“So, Miss Melissa Fernando, do you actually mean that you’re leaving Canada and going to your country? You’re seriously leaving your best friend.” If looks could kill, I would already be dead by now.
“Partially yes, but you’re coming with me.” New York here I come! We were seated in the plane, ready to face my old life. I closed my eyes, thinking about the dreadful incident. It’s been 7 years, but it’s still fresh in my mind. I can’t seem to get that memory out of my mind.
“I’m getting married.”
“Wh-at?” Am I tripping or did I hear it right?
“Just come home quickly Mel, I have so much to tell you and we have so much work. Come quickly, my dear.”
It was the first time ever that my mother had talked to me so sweetly and she was even using endearment. That was not good.
Definitely not good at all. I sped off home with Kerry by my side. The first thing I noticed when I got there was a black Mercedes-Benz parked outside.
My mother instantly came to my side and there was a man seated on the couch. His back was facing me when we approached him my mom spoke. “I know that you have already met him. Melissa, but now I have met him as my husband. Melissa meets Mr Alexopoulos, my soon-to-be groom, and Johnathan meets my daughter Melissa.”
That was when I received the second biggest shock of my life. The first one was my mom getting married and the second bomb was definitely the worst.
Mr. Alexopoulos?!! He’s a happily married man with a gorgeous wife and a son, A-Ar- Aries...
Oh my God, Aries!!!
“I know what you’re thinking, daughter, but he’s ready to divorce his wife and leave his family just for me. Can you believe this?! Isn’t he just amazing?!” My mother exclaims and sighs dreamily.
Amazing!!!!!
I didn’t know about that, but I was sure he was a deceitful asshole. At the same time, the door banged open, startling Kerry who was still standing at the side.
The last person I expected to come here was Aries Alexopoulos and there he was. A sobbing Mrs. Penelope Alexopoulos clutching his shirt tightly. Oh, sweet lord, the woman didn’t deserve that! I could feel my eyes getting misty.
And Aries was watching my mom and his dad with fury. He marched towards us still holding his mother and spitting words with pure hatred and vengeance towards the couple.
“You made a mistake by hurting my mother... Mr Johnathan and you are going to pay for that. I’ll make sure you’ll regret doing what you did. Mark my words.” With that, he turned and left. His frightful words didn’t seem to affect my mother.
She was too consumed with the excitement of becoming Mrs. Alexopoulos.
“Hey wake up; we are in New York, sleepyhead. Come on wake up!” I opened my eyes, adjusting to the brightness. I jerk a little, startled by Demy Moore’s high-pitched voice.
That’s something new coming from Demy Moore. She’s usually the quiet type.
“We are in NY and I’m freaking out. Please Mel, let’s go.” I lifted my eyebrows, looking at her in confusion.
Why is she so excited?
Demy Moore is really weird sometimes. We dashed outside searching for my name.
My mother said that she'd send her driver to take me. I wonder if it’s Mr. Grant, he has been our driver for ages now. I guess that would be her husband’s choice.
“Hey look there-” Demy Moore looks in the direction, “-I think I found him.” I look at Demy Moore confused.
She mouthed ‘your driver’.
Thank God!
“Greetings Miss Fernando, I am Sebastian Bruce. Nice to meet you. I hope you and your friend had a nice flight. I’m your appointed driver.”
“Hello, Mr Bruce, nice to meet you too, and yes, we had a nice flight. Thank you. Shall we?” Sebastian Bruce nodded, proceeding near the white BMW.
I started having doubts about this Bruce guy. He wasn’t taking the direction to my mother’s house.
Is he really my driver or some kind of kidnapper?
I looked at Kerry worriedly. She was enjoying the view outside.
“Where are we going, Mr. Bruce? I don’t think this is the way to my mother’s place.” I asked him anxiously.
Bruce looks confused as if solving a math equation. “I think you are mistaken, Miss Fernando. Look ahead of us. We’re already here.”
When I looked at the front... I saw the entrance and, if I remembered correctly, that was the entrance to Alexopoulos’s Residence. I should have expected this silly me; my mother is an Alexopoulos now.
Whenever I meet my mother, she’s always full of surprises, but well, what can I say?
It’s my mother, Rosemary Fernando? She never fails to surprise me.
Let’s see what more she has kept for me.
