Chapter 2
HIGH SCHOOL Melissa Fernando
“And I win!”
“Screw you!”
“I dare you to.”
“Oh just shut up.”
“I’ll try to.”
“Thank you.” I said proudly.
“You are not very welcome,” said this dummy.
“For goodness sake, Kerry. Will you stop now? We need to study. You know chemistry is not my cup of tea and if I fail the test tomorrow, you’re so dead.”
Melissa was trying to be serious but with Kerry here she could never do that, the girl was too much of a comedian. Kerry glanced at her with raised eyebrows.
“Oh please, you’ll fail and I’ll be dead. Did you bang your pretty big head somewhere? What’s the logic in that, ya?”
“Kerry, please be serious. You know how my mom is, if I don’t get good grades, she will transfer me and I don’t ever wish for that to happen and, for the record, my head isn’t big, you oaf. ”
“Oh yeah... yeah just don’t start with your grandma's lecture, here we come chemistry,” Kerry says playfully as we walk together side by side in the middle of the corridor, heading to class.
The school was boring, as usual; the Chemistry test was boring too, as usual. The first thing I did when I received the test paper was glance towards Kerry and, as usual, she was already looking my way.
I read the first question and, as usual, it was like trying to understand how an ox would give birth to a dinosaur. I am waiting for Kerry at our usual spot. Well, it seems like “usual” is my favorite word today!
“Yo, babe! Did the test go well for you? How was it?”
“Pretty stupid.” Kerry threw her head back and laughed like a bull.
Seriously, who laughs like that?
Kerry!
A few students turned and looked at us weirdly. I guess it should be normal for other students for us to act like that.
“That was not what I was expecting from you, Lisa. Just yesterday you were trying to be a chemist and now y~.... hey look there, your dream guy and well, everybody’s dream guy.” Kerry sighed dreamily, looking behind me. Silence consumed the hallway.
I didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. The only one who had the power of making my stomach churn is Aries Alexopoulos.
I turned around and glanced at him. There he stood with his best friend at his side. Lucas was known as the biggest player in our school, he was just like Aries, the popular guy, even though Aries was not a playboy.
Everybody stepped aside their way, they were in their senior year and we were kind of intimidated by them as we were younger. Kerry and I were juniors. I look at Aries’ perfect figure.
My mom was close to his parents. She goes to their place regularly, and attends all their parties and gatherings, whereas I stopped going there when I was six years old. It was his 12th birthday. I was so excited to go, but when I got there, he was busy with his friends and didn’t recognize me.
When I told him my name and about our last meeting, he said that he had never met any girl with my name and, not to forget, he made fun of me in front of his friends. I ran away crying heavily and I ended up breaking Mrs. Alexopoulos's favorite vase. Since that day, I have never set foot at his place.
My mother was okay with that because she didn’t want to get humiliated again. Aries will turn 18th this year and will graduate. He would never know that he once had a little friend named Melissa.
“He was a jerk back then, but if I was in your shoes then I would’ve hit his pretty skull and asked him if he had recognized me then. I’m sure he would have.” Kerry always likes to exaggerate.
But that’s in her genes in “No my dear Kerry, he was a kid back then and let’s not talk about him right now. You know I’m really tired and I don’t know what lies I’ll feed my mom about the test.”
A yawn escaped my mouth. “I don’t think she’ll remember, knowing your mom’s parties and so on.” Kerry scoffed.
“Hey, don’t say that... Well, she’s still my mother. And I love her even if she isn’t really the best example of a mother, but she provides me with my needs, wants and basic necessities.”
“It’s not really a problem if she can’t be affectionate and caring,” I muttered, avoiding Kerry’s eyes.
“Yeah yeah, keep saying that to yourself. I know you, Lisa; you crave your mother’s attention.” Kerry said, rolling her eyes. I couldn’t disagree with her, it was a fact. Kerry has been with me since kindergarten.
She knows me more than I know myself.
“Hey, enough about your mother, let’s go and grab something at McDonald’s after school. What do you say? It’s been a while since we hung out.” Kerry was right. I needed to distract myself from the daily routine.
“Sure, Oh... why not?”
A few hours later, the bell rang. I scurried out of the classroom to meet Kerry at the gate. The hallway was packed with students rushing off to the gate. I was running and suddenly, out of nowhere, someone came in front of me.
I didn’t have time to stop bumping into something and my books came flying along. I looked up at them.
I fall person and...
Shit! Mila.
Mila Kuris was the school’s it girl. She was the head of the cheer team and the girl of every guy’s wet dreams. And apparently the sweetest girlfriend of Ares Alexopoulos.
“I’m really sorry, are you hurt?” Mila looked at me with concern. She was a nice girl but I was always intimidated by her and her friends.
She’s a senior too and hung out with the popular students. “No I’m okay, thank you. It’s fine and I was in a hurry. I need to go bye-bye.” At a distance, I saw Aries approaching while looking at me curiously. I quickly ran past Mila.
Phew...
That was close.
That was close. “So you ran away? Just like that? I bet it was hilarious.” Kerry continued laughing and making fun of me. That was what she'd been doing for the past twenty minutes.
My phone suddenly started ringing, disturbing the noise of Kerry’s laughter around us. I looked at the screen and wished that I never had.
Mother.....
“Hello, daughter.” Only this woman calls me like that... It seems so formal.
“Hi mom, why are you calling me? Is there something wrong?” I kept deep down, the call was going to turn my world 180°.
“There is absolutely nothing wrong. In fact, I have a piece of good news; scratch that, the best news ever.” I could already imagine her smirking right now.
“What is it?” I asked. I didn't want to go around the bush to waste her and my time.
“I’m getting married.” I stared at the mobile, maybe I missed hearing something.
