A woman of conviction
The morning sun stretched across the quiet streets of Greenville as Sarah Williams stepped out of her small apartment. The air was fresh, carrying the scent of blooming flowers from nearby gardens. She adjusted the strap of her handbag and glanced at her watch. It was Saturday, her favorite day of the week. For many people, Saturday was a time to relax, sleep late, or spend time shopping. For Sarah, it was a day dedicated to her ministry. As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, she looked forward to sharing her faith with others. At twenty-four years old, Sarah was known for her warm smile and gentle nature. She worked during the week as an administrative assistant at a local accounting firm, but her faith remained the center of her life. She had dreams just like everyone else. She dreamed of getting married. She dreamed of raising children. She dreamed of growing old with a husband who loved Jehovah as much as she did. But Sarah had made a personal decision years earlier. She would never compromise her beliefs in pursuit of love. Many young women her age were already married. Some had children. Others were engaged and planning weddings. Sarah wasn't worried. She believed that if marriage was part of Jehovah's purpose for her life, it would happen at the right time. That morning she met several members of her congregation outside the Kingdom Hall. After a brief prayer, they paired up and headed into different neighborhoods. Sarah spent hours going from door to door. Most people politely declined to talk. A few listened for several minutes. Some closed the door immediately. None of that discouraged her. She understood that faith required patience. By early afternoon, the group returned to the Kingdom Hall. Sarah exchanged greetings with friends before heading home. She didn't know that before the day ended, her life would begin to change. --- Across town, Michael Johnson was having a very different Saturday. The twenty-six-year-old construction supervisor sat at a crowded sports bar with several friends, laughing as they watched a football game. Michael was the kind of man people naturally liked. He was confident without being arrogant. Hardworking without becoming obsessed with work. Friendly enough to make strangers feel comfortable within minutes. Yet despite his success, something was missing. His friends often joked that he was too picky when it came to relationships. The truth was simpler. Michael had dated several women over the years, but none of those relationships had lasted. Something always felt incomplete. "Man, you're almost thirty," his friend Jason teased. "When are you finally settling down?" Michael laughed. "When I meet the right woman." Jason rolled his eyes. "You've been saying that for years." "Maybe because it's true." The conversation continued, but Michael's attention drifted elsewhere. Deep down, he wondered whether the right woman even existed. --- The following Monday began like any other. Sarah arrived at work shortly before eight o'clock. She greeted coworkers, organized documents, and settled into her routine. Around noon, her manager asked her to deliver some paperwork to a nearby office building. She gathered the documents and left. The walk was only a few blocks. As she approached a busy intersection, she noticed several people waiting for the traffic light to change. Among them was a tall man in a navy-blue shirt speaking on his phone. Michael Johnson. Sarah had never seen him before. Michael hadn't noticed her either. The light changed. The crowd began crossing. Halfway through the intersection, a cyclist suddenly sped through a red light. Everything happened in seconds. The cyclist narrowly missed an elderly woman crossing the street. Startled, the woman lost her balance. Before she could fall, Sarah rushed forward and caught her arm. "Are you alright?" Sarah asked. The woman nodded nervously. "Thank you, dear." Several people stopped to help. Michael ended his phone call and walked over. "You handled that quickly," he said. Sarah smiled politely. "I just happened to be nearby." The elderly woman thanked them both before continuing on her way. For a moment, Sarah and Michael stood facing each other. Neither realized how important that brief encounter would become. "I'm Michael," he said. "Sarah." There was something refreshing about her. No dramatic introduction. No attempt to impress him. Just quiet kindness. "Nice meeting you, Sarah." "You too." With that, they went their separate ways. A simple encounter. Nothing more. Or so it seemed. --- Over the next several weeks, fate—or perhaps coincidence—continued placing them in each other's path. They met again at a coffee shop. Then at a bookstore. Later at a community fundraiser. Each encounter led to longer conversations. Michael learned that Sarah loved reading, volunteering, and spending time with her congregation. Sarah learned that Michael enjoyed sports, traveling, and working with his hands. Their personalities were different in many ways. Yet they connected effortlessly. One evening, after running into each other for the fourth time, Michael smiled. "At this point, I think the universe is trying to tell us something." Sarah laughed. "Maybe we're just shopping in the same places." "Or maybe I should finally ask for your phone number." Sarah hesitated for a moment. Then she smiled. "Okay." Michael entered the number into his phone. For the first time in years, excitement stirred inside him. He couldn't explain it. There was simply something special about Sarah. Something different. Something real. As they said goodbye, neither knew where the relationship would lead. Neither knew about the challenges waiting ahead. Neither knew that the next ten years would test their patience, commitment, faith, and love in ways they could never imagine. But the journey had begun. And for Sarah Williams, it all started with a simple decision she would never abandon: Her faith would always come first.
