The Wedding Day

1239 Words
The months between the proposal and the wedding passed in a blur. For nearly ten years, Sarah and Michael had waited for this moment. Now that it was finally approaching, time seemed to move faster than ever. Wedding plans filled their schedules. Guest lists. Venue preparations. Clothing fittings. Decorations. Photographs. Music. Family meetings. Every detail required attention. Yet neither complained. After all they had endured, planning a wedding felt like a privilege. --- Sarah often caught herself staring at the engagement ring on her finger. Sometimes she smiled without realizing it. Other times she simply sat quietly, reflecting on the journey that had brought her here. One evening, while helping her mother organize wedding invitations, she paused. Linda noticed immediately. "What are you thinking about?" Sarah smiled. "Ten years." Her mother laughed softly. "That's a lot of history." "It is." Sarah looked down at the invitation in her hand. "There were times I didn't think we'd make it." Linda reached across the table and squeezed her daughter's hand. "But you did." Sarah nodded. "We did." Neither woman knew how precious those words would eventually become. --- Michael was experiencing similar emotions. One afternoon, he stood with Jason in a men's clothing store during a suit fitting. Jason adjusted his tie while studying his longtime friend. "You actually look happy." Michael laughed. "Thanks." "I'm serious." Jason shook his head. "I haven't seen you this happy in years." Michael smiled. Because it was true. After years of uncertainty, his future finally felt clear. For the first time, he wasn't wondering what might happen. He was preparing for what would happen. Marriage. A home. A family. A life together. Everything they had dreamed about seemed within reach. --- The night before the wedding, Sarah struggled to sleep. Not because she was nervous. Because she was excited. She lay awake in her childhood bedroom, staring at the ceiling. The room felt familiar. Comfortable. Safe. Yet she knew it would never be quite the same again. Tomorrow she would leave this chapter of her life behind. Tomorrow she would become a wife. The realization filled her heart with gratitude. Before going to sleep, she knelt beside her bed. She prayed for her marriage. For wisdom. For faith. For happiness. For Michael. And for whatever future awaited them. Then she climbed into bed with a smile. --- Across town, Michael experienced a similar sleepless night. His suit hung neatly in the closet. His vows were written. Everything was ready. Yet his mind refused to settle. He kept replaying memories. The first meeting. The first date. The arguments. The waiting. The years. Every chapter of their story seemed to pass before his eyes. Eventually, he laughed at himself. Tomorrow couldn't come soon enough. --- The wedding morning arrived bright and beautiful. Sunlight filled the sky. The weather was perfect. Friends and family began arriving early. Excitement spread through every corner of the venue. Inside a preparation room, Sarah stood before a mirror. Her wedding dress was elegant and modest. Exactly what she had always imagined. When she saw her reflection, tears immediately filled her eyes. Not because of the dress. Because of what the day represented. Her mother stood beside her. For a moment, neither spoke. Then Linda smiled. "You look beautiful." Sarah laughed through her tears. "You're supposed to say that." "I know." They hugged tightly. Neither wanted to let go. --- Meanwhile, Michael waited nervously with his groomsmen. He checked his watch. Then checked it again. Then again. Jason finally laughed. "If you look at that watch one more time, it might stop working." Michael shook his head. "Why is time moving so slowly?" Everyone laughed. Because everyone understood. --- The ceremony began shortly after noon. Guests filled their seats. Quiet conversations faded. Anticipation filled the room. Michael stood at the front. His heart pounded. Then the music began. Everyone turned. Sarah appeared. For a moment, the entire world seemed to stop. Michael had seen her countless times over the past decade. Yet he had never seen her like this. She looked radiant. Confident. Beautiful. But more than that. She looked happy. Truly happy. As she walked toward him, tears formed in Michael's eyes. Years of waiting. Years of hope. Years of uncertainty. All leading to this moment. --- When Sarah reached the front, their eyes met. Neither could stop smiling. The officiant began speaking. Words about commitment. Faith. Love. Marriage. The meaning behind the promises they were about to make. Every sentence felt deeply personal. Because neither Sarah nor Michael viewed marriage casually. They understood its value. Its responsibility. Its permanence. After all, they had waited nearly ten years to reach it. --- Then came the vows. Michael spoke first. His voice trembled slightly. "Sarah, you have been my best friend, my greatest supporter, and the person who taught me the true meaning of commitment." Tears filled Sarah's eyes. Michael continued. "I promise to love you, honor you, respect you, and stand beside you through every season of life." His voice cracked. "Whether life brings joy or hardship, success or struggle, I choose you." Several guests quietly wiped away tears. Then it was Sarah's turn. She looked directly into his eyes. "Michael, for nearly ten years, we have walked a difficult road together." Emotion filled her voice. "There were moments of uncertainty." "Moments of waiting." "Moments of fear." She smiled. "But there was never a moment when I stopped loving you." Michael blinked back tears. Sarah continued. "I promise to stand beside you, support you, encourage you, and remain faithful to you for the rest of my life." The room fell silent. No one wanted to miss a single word. --- The rings were exchanged. The promises completed. The officiant smiled warmly. "By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife." Applause immediately erupted. But neither Sarah nor Michael heard much of it. Because in that moment, only one thing mattered. They were finally married. After ten years of waiting, they were husband and wife. --- The reception that followed was filled with laughter, music, and celebration. Family members shared stories. Friends offered congratulations. Photographs captured every smile. Every embrace. Every joyful moment. At one point, Sarah sat quietly beside Michael and watched the crowd. "So," he asked. "So?" "How does it feel?" Sarah smiled. "Like a dream." Michael laughed. "I was going to say the same thing." She leaned her head against his shoulder. For a few moments, neither spoke. They simply enjoyed the happiness surrounding them. The happiness they had worked so hard to reach. --- That evening, after the reception ended and the guests departed, Sarah and Michael finally found themselves alone. For the first time as husband and wife. The realization made both of them smile. Their long journey had reached its destination. Or so it seemed. They spoke late into the night about their future. Children. Travel. Family. Dreams. Plans. Everything felt possible. Everything felt bright. Everything felt new. Neither could imagine how quickly life could change. Neither could imagine that less than a year from now, they would face a challenge far greater than any they had encountered during ten years of waiting. But that night belonged to happiness. That night belonged to love. That night belonged to two people who had spent a decade choosing each other. And after ten long years, they finally began the life they had always wanted. Together.
