THREE
"I'm sorry Jake, I know you really wanted to go."
" its okay, I rather stay here with you, than fight a bunch of bad guys anyway."
Liana gave him a look to say she wasn't fooled. Jake was one of the best fighters the pack had. And he clearly had wanted to go out to fight with their parents.
"I'm worried Jack, the Mongrels are really strong."
"And so are our fighters. You don't have to worry" Jake said reassuringly.
"Come, eat some cake." Jake said to Liana.
"Can't, lost my appetite."
"Let's play chess then."
Liana didn't feel like playing anything at all and she knew Jake didn't either. But she didn't want to thwart his efforts at making the both of them feel better. So she said.
"Alright."
Jake looked around then said.
" Damn!"
"What?" Liana asked, alarmed.
"The chess is up in my room, from when we played the last time."
"Then just go get it." Liana said.
"I don't want to leave you" Jake said
"I'll be fine. Besides you're just going upstairs."
"Okay, I'll be back in two seconds." Jake said as he dashed upstairs.
Liana sighed. Things were going so well. Now this had to happen. She moved over to the window, which faced the beach. Actually, all their windows faced the beach and their house was far away from all the other houses in the pack. Another fault Liana blamed herself. While growing up, she was constantly picked on and bullied by the other kids on account of her nature. She was called an 'alien'. So their parents decided to move away to this house. Liana was okay with it though, she loved this house for its closeness to the beach. And it wasn't like she had friends she missed anyway. It was Jake who had friends. Jake, she thought sadly, he was the one who constantly had to sacrifice for her. Currently he bounded back down the stairs.
"You took more than two seconds." Liana said to him.
"Well, that was because I had to pick up the pieces. Now come on, lets play."
They played for a quiet a while. But none of them had interest in the game so they ended it. Liana walked over to the window. Jake paced the room, fingering his dagger.
The sun was set and soon darkness gave way to a moonlit night. All round the night was still, it was like a spell had been cast. The spell was broken however by a loud howl.
Liana and Jake rushed to the door. This howl signalled the fight was over. It was from their Alpha. So this meant they won!
Delirious they ran out to the keep. What they saw however was not the joy there were expecting. Most of their fighters were injured and all about, everyone carried a grave expression.
Jake and Lianna looked desperately for their parents. Carrillo, one of the lead fighters walked past. Jake hurriedly walked to meet up with him.
"Sir Carrillo, have you seen my parents?"
Carrillo had a sad expression on his face that Jake refused to accept for what it was.
"I'm sorry Jake, during the fight four of the rebels attacked your mother all at once. Your father moved in to help, and they were both killed. None of us could help, because they were all round. I'm so sorry." Carrillo said on an endnote tapping Jake's Shoulder.
Liana who had been standing behind Jake all the while hugged him tight, sobbing profusely.
One of the Alpha's men approached them and said
"The Alpha wishes to see the two of you."
