"Surprise!" Eulena said to Jake as he bounded down the stairs with Liana at his wake. "Oh mum! Thanks." Jake said, looking over at the table set with all of his favourite dishes and a.... "Cake!" Liana squealed excitedly. "Its my cake!" Jake said, blocking her off on her way to get the cake. "Come on you too, there's enough food and cake for everyone" their mother laughing. "Where's Dad?" Jake asked looking round. "Over here." His father, Bilan said, coming down the stairs. He was wearing his patrol jacket, which had lots of gemstone pieces on them. Red and blue and grey ones. Each one of these colours signified the different levels of the patrol system. The patrol system was a group of werewolves from the pack whose job was to keep guard at their boundaries to ward off intruders. They wore a brown jacket embedded with gems as their uniform. Liana had always thought this jacket to be quite unnecessary as they would all shift when keeping guard anyway. But the Patrol members adored this with their very beings. The lower grange of the team wore the jacket with the red gems on the left sleeves. The colour and the position symbolised they were relatively newbies flashing out a warning that they could do something wrong any minute. These group were mainly boys still in their teenage years. The second grange had blue gems on their collar to signify they were somewhat cooled and wore it on their necks with their lives on the line. This group were adult boys and this where Jake belonged. The colour Liana loved the most was the pebbles which were the same colour of her eyes. Though she didn't like it on her eyes, she practically loved them on the jacket. The grey pebbles weren't all that flattering on the brown jackets, but they identified the highest grange of the patrol which consisted of men totally imbibed into the system. Their gems were on their left breast which signified that they had not just their lives but hearts on the line. The inhabitants of Crystal pack believed the heart lived on after death, and so valued their hearts which they held as the connection of the body to the soul. Bilan not just belonged to this group but headed it and Liana had wondered sometimes if this explained her love for the dull grey pebbles. It was the same colour she had used on Jake's dagger. "Are you going out dad?" Liana asked "No." "Then why are you wearing your patrol jacket." "Correction! Jake's patrol jacket." "What?" Jake said, looking confused. His father took off the jacket and put it on Jake. "Your mother and I believe you're ready." The position of the Patrol leader was passed from father to son, hence it has been passed down over the years in their lineage. As Bilan was now the leader, his son, Jake was to take over from him. "You mean it, dad?" It was custom for leaders pass on the position to their first sons after they have been trained rigorously for the purpose. This was to ensure that every father passed the role to a worthy son. Should the first son be found unworthy, it would be passed down to the second. In the case where all the sons of the Patrol leader were found unworthy or had only one son who was found unworthy, another lineage and family took it up. "Yes son, you earned it, at the last training." Jake was trained by his father on combat and all about patrol keeping. Being the only son of his father, his training had been more thorough and rigorous than the others at his grange. "After you find your mate, you're officially the new patrol leader of Crystal moon park." His mother said, coming over to hug him. "Congratulations Jake!" Liana said. "Now let's eat!" Just as they all took their seats, they heard a loud howl. It wasn't from just any wolf. It was from their Alpha, and it signalled war!
