Chapter 3

Startled, they all grew very still. Bilan's blue eyes turned an inky shade as he initiated a mind link with the Alpha. It was a were-ability he had attained when he became patrol leader. "What's going on Dad?" Jake asked as soon as his father's eyes cleared. "Our pack is being attacked. By the Mongrels." A shady stillness enveloped the room as the very air seemed to stand still. The mongrels were a vicious pack of rebel werewolves who raided other packs and took over their lands to establish dominion. The news of them having ravished other parks had gotten to their pack, and although they made necessary preparations for an attack, they never believed their pack would be attacked. This was mainly because the two packs they had heard had been attacked had massive land space, which was what rebels were usually after. Apart from this, they were far away and none of them had entertained the notion the rebels would actually get to their small pack with nothing much to boast off than their gems. Other than the the three colours used on the Patrol Jackets, the pack members with the exception of Liana attached little value to the gems. So they never truly worried the rebels would get to them. They had seemingly been dwelling on a floating bubble which had now suddenly been burst open and they were now down to the ground with the reality of the rebels bearing down on them. Bilan and Eulena moved hurriedly to the door. Jake followed. "No son, you stay here, keep your sister safe." "But I want to go with you." " Listen to your father, Jake. Liana needs someone here with her." Their mother said. Liana looked down at the floor. It was in precise moments like this, she felt utterly useless. At a time like this, she was a burden to her family and to her pack. Liana was not a werewolf or a shifter of any kind. But she wasn't a human either, Werewolves could smell humans and she was told by her family and other wolves that she wasn't human. They didn't smell human nature on her. In fact, Liana had no scent at all. So what was she? No one knew, not even the Alpha with his heightened sense of smell. Human or non-human, whatever she was, the only powers she could boast of were breathing hot and cold when happy or sad and an uncanny ability to loudly and beautifully hear raindrops hitting pebbles, when no one else could. But as far as Liana was concerned, these powers, if they even could be called powers, were useless. Especially in a situation like the present one. What could she possibly do. Breath down necks? Of wolves! "I'll be fine, I have my dagger with me remember?" Liana said solemnly. Being at a disadvantage of not being able to shift, Liana had mastered the use of a weaponry dagger. She was good with combats and though not to be compared with that of a wolf, she was pretty fast on her legs. "There's no doubt that you have your way with a dagger, Liana, but I'm afraid its no use in a fight with a wolf, especially a rebel." Another howl sounded over the gloom. It bounded over the walls and then out over to the meadow. "Come on Eulena, we have to go." Bilan said, as he moved over hurriedly to the door. "Promise me you'll take care of your sister Jake." Eulena said holding Jake's shoulder. "I promise." Jake said "We'll be back." Their mother said, and quickly hugging them as she made her way to Bilan who was standing by the door looking intently at them. Together, they run out into the meadow, shifting in their wake.
