Guilt, frustration, and embarrassment flickered across Samuel's features in quick succession after my reply.
Hugging the bed linens tighter to her chest, Sally spoke in a resigned tone, "It's alright, Sam. I'll go ask another one of our friends for a place to stay. Someone in our group will surely lend me a hand."
Her words carried an unspoken dig, painting Samuel as disloyal to their friendship.
Straightening his posture, Samuel grew defensive in front of Sally. "Alice, when did you turn so nitpicky? If there were anything inappropriate between Sally and me, I would never bring her into our home! Sally has already compromised by moving to the guest room. What more could you possibly want?"
Pressing two fingers to my temples, worn out by the endless bickering, I grabbed my luggage and headed for the front door. "I want nothing at all. This business trip has worn me thin, and all I want is a quiet place to rest. If she refuses to leave, then I will."
Samuel simply stood in the doorway, watching as I stepped into the elevator.
Just before the elevator doors slid shut, Sally flashed a taunting grin.
Raising her voice on purpose to ensure I heard every word, she called out, "Now that's what a real man looks like! You're the only one in our crew who won't let his wife walk all over you. Total respect!"
