Chapter 1 The Stained Pink Bedding
Lowering my gaze, I spotted a pair of slippers on her feet. They were mine.
Silence hung thick in the air, and I did not utter a word.
With a firm gesture, Samuel herded Sally back toward the kitchen area. "Finish your cooking first. Alice is home now, and dinner still isn't ready."
Leaning in close to his ear, Sally whispered with a teasing grin, "That chowder's simmered to perfection. You'll still have plenty of stamina tonight, mark my words."
Blushing further, Samuel avoided my eyes.
Rolling my luggage into the bedroom, I winced at the garish pink bedding. That ugly red mark burned even more sharply against the fabric.
Sally followed me inside. "Your old sheets were so plain and lifeless. Where's the fun in that? This pink set really livens up the whole bedroom vibe."
Makeup and skincare bottles lay piled haphazardly in one corner of the vanity, and clear signs of rummaging marked the closet.
Bits of lacy lingerie peeked out from beneath the pillows and along the bed frame.
Letting out an exaggerated gasp, Sally tucked the undergarments casually under a pillow. "You got home so suddenly. I never had a chance to tidy up around here. You've got such an observant eye to notice all this mess. I've always been a little scattered—you don't mind, right?"
Slinging an arm across Sally's shoulders, Samuel spoke in a relaxed, dismissive tone, "Alice isn't the petty type. She'd never get upset over something this trivial."
Pushing down the anger simmering inside me, I turned to face him directly. "Guests belong in the guest room. That's basic common courtesy. You don't know that?"
Samuel's entire frame went rigid at my words.
Sally landed another light tap on his shoulder. "See what you did? You've upset your wife now. Go on and make it up to her!"
She folded her arms across her chest and stood back to watch the scene unfold.
Tearing the pink sheets free from the mattress, I tossed the bundle down in front of her.
My tone turned cold and unyielding. "I have a strong aversion to dirt and clutter. You need to find somewhere else to stay."
