Chapter 6 “Freedom” POV Syria “Sy?” a familiar voice says. “Ashley?” “Do you need a ride? Where’s your jeep?” She asks. “I don’t know; I was kidnapped and just escaped.” “Oh, my gosh.” She gets out of her car and runs up and hugs me. “I barely recognized you, Sy. You're wearing clothes that aren’t your style, and you look stunning. Did you shift?” “Ya my charm broke when I was in a fight.” She opens her car door. “Get in. I’ll take you home or to the police station. Whatever you want.” “They’ll lock me up if they discover my charm is gone. Just take me home and I’ll figure it out.” As soon as I open my front door, Enya dives at me. “Sister! You’re alive! I’m so sorry for sending you out so late for a stupid slushy. Wait, you look different. Did you shift?” I explain everything to my sister and Ashley and make them promise not to tell anyone. Apparently, the police found my Jeep and purse in a superstore parking lot. Dad parked the jeep in the garage. I’m so excited to be home. After Ashley leaves, I find my phone and crawl into my comfy familiar bed. I discover Jackson has texted and called over a hundred times. I send him a message, he can pick up the ring tomorrow. I leave it in an envelope in the mailbox. Then I fall asleep. My sister wakes me up screaming and jumping. “Enya, you're supposed to knock.” I grumble. “Quick, come see.” She shouts. I followed her into the living room. The TV is blaring on the news channel. I rub my eyes and yawn while sitting down. There’s a news flash at the bottom of the screen. Female demon wolfs are no longer to be hunted. Anyone caught injuring a female demon wolf shall be thrown in the dungeon and punished severely. I rub my eyes again. Am I dreaming? Is this real? All my life I’ve been hunted. Not able to have a normal life or work or go to school. The reporter shows the castle, and Damien is making the announcement. My sister and I dance around and make Shirley Temples and eat popcorn to celebrate. When there’s a knock at the door. Enya and I stop dancing and stare at each other. When the door opens. “Syria?” the voice says. “Jackson? What the hell? Get out of my house!” “Ashley called me the other day. She hadn’t heard from you in almost two weeks and was worried about you.” He says. “Well, I’m fine now, and the ring is in the mailbox, so please leave.” “You look like you shifted? Your stunning Syria.” He walks over and runs his fingers through my hair. “I mean, you were gorgeous before. But now….” “It's time for you to leave.” Enya gets between us and pushes him towards the door. “Can we go somewhere, maybe grab a coffee and talk?” Jackson asks. “She will be going nowhere with you!” She snaps and slams the door in his face and locks it. I high five Enya, and we laugh. “Thanks so much; I would have never been able to do that.” I say. “So, can I see your wolf Syria?” My sister asks. “I don’t want to scare you.” “I know you're a monster. You're still my sister. Please.” ******* I wake up in the middle of the night on the floor with my pillow and blankets next to something fluffy. Esme is purring in my head. Did I fall out of bed? “No Tiberius is here. Your sister let him in while you were sleeping. He was pacing outside, so I called him in.” I turn around, and his big red eyes are watching me. I rub his fur and trace my fingers around his face. He is so beautiful and sweet. “When he’s not trying to kill us,” Esme says. I snuggle into him and fall asleep. I wake up in the morning, and he’s still there. I head out to make us breakfast. My dad is there. “So I guess this means you can have a life now, Sy.” He mumbles. “What did you say, Dad?” I ask. “I said, even though you killed your mother. You're free now!” He growls. “It was an accident.” “Well, unless you can bring her back. You don’t deserve to be free!” He barks. Tiberius comes out of my room and growls at my dad. Dad takes a step back. “Dad Tiberius. Tiberius, this is my father. He’s mad Esme accidentally murdered my mother. It’s always the same morning conversation.” “Is your wolfs name Esme? Did you shift Syria?” Dad asks. “Well, Dad, if you stopped looking through me and actually looked at me. I wouldn’t need to answer that question.” I grab our food and head back to my room. “I don’t eat much and give the rest to Tiberius.” There’s a knock at my door. “Damiens here to see you and Tiberius.” Dad says.
