Chapter 5
“The First Shift.”
POV Syria
Tiberius just ignores him like he isn’t there.
“Why don’t you take Syria for her first shift, and I’ll get a bigger bed sorted for you once you're gone.”
Tiberius’ ears perk, and he looks at me and jumps on the floor. Then stands there looking between me and the door until I get up and follow him.
He leads me out to the courtyard then he takes off into the woods. I just stand there. What do I do now? I have no idea how to shift.
Tiberius comes back and lies on his back with his feet in the air. So, I do the same. Still nothing. I start watching the birds fly by and relax in the grass. The minute I’m fully relaxed and lost in my world, I feel my body start to change.
I see fur spread all over my skin. My flesh stretches and my bones crack, and the pain is excruciating. It feels like it goes on forever; the pain getting increasingly worse. More cracking and snapping of bones until it just suddenly stops. I look down at black fur paws. I’m as black as night.
We run towards the woods at incredible speed. Tiberius follows us. I feel the wind through my hair. My sight and smell increase. I smell and taste the air. I smell chicken, and Esme chases a bunny through the forest and catches it and eats it.
We stop and roll on the ground. Stick our feet in the air and relax. Tiberius nuzzles us to get up. We bounce up and go bounding in the forest again towards a lake.
We dive in the lake to cool off. Then bolt out almost running on water. It’s the most amazing feeling ever. Everything feels intensified. Like experiencing all five senses all over again.
We’re at full speed about to jump back in the lake again when Tiberius slams into us almost knocking us out cold.
He jumps on top of us and bites hard on our ass drawing blood. He licks our wound and takes off with Esme fast at his heels.
Esme plows into him and scratches his back for revenge. After what feels like hours, we return to the courtyard, and Esme shifts back to my human form.
I head back to our room, and a massive king size bed with the most soft comfy sheets greets me the minute my head hits the pillow. I close my eyes in complete exhaustion and fall asleep.
***********
I wake up to Tiberius snuggling tightly into us, keeping us warm. I slide out of the bed and head to the kitchen. I grab a tray with all our favorite snacks and a pot of coffee.
On my way back to our room. A tall, gorgeous, tattooed, shirtless man with dreamy blue-green eyes. Short brown curly locks, a chisel sexy jaw and a body built by the gods catches my eye. He passes by smelling of fresh rain and musk. My heart pounds in my chest, and my world tilts. Does Damien have another brother?
I want to chase after him to ask him if he's any relation to Damien. However, I’m equally excited to see the look on Tiberius face when I bring him breakfast.
I get back to an empty room. I pout for a while and then nibble on breakfast and sit around all day waiting for Tiberius to return. He doesn’t return until late with a tray of dinner. Then he snuggles into me like we were never apart.
**********
I get up earlier this time and run to the kitchen, grab the food and coffee and bolt to the bedroom, almost slamming into the handsome man from yesterday.
“Watch were your going!” he yells.
I raise an eyebrow and keep going. My wolf paces in my head. Why does this stranger feel familiar?
“Its you stealing the morning coffee and my favorite snacks.” He growls.
“Oh, they have another pot of coffee on; don’t worry.” I lie and run to the bedroom to find an empty bed again.
I eat breakfast slowly, hoping Tiberius will make an appearance. I eventually head back to the kitchen with the tray. When I run into the same man.
“You lied! There was no more coffee in the kitchen.” He grumbles.
“Who are you?” I ask, “Does Damien have another brother?”
“How do you know Damien? What are you doing here?”
“I asked first, who are you? Why do you seem so familiar?”
“I’m Vincent Damien's brother. Who are you?” He says.
“I’m Syria.” I say, shocked.
“Syria who?”
“You really don’t know who I am?” I ask
“This game is getting old.” He growls.
“I….”
“She’s a friend of mine who’s been staying here with us,” Damien says.
“I think it’s time for her to go.”
Wow, that kinda hurt. Rejected again.
“She’s been helping me with Tiberius.” Damien says.
“Well, I’m here now, and that won’t be necessary.” Vincent walks away.
“Vincent,” Damien says, “Syria is the only one that can control Tiberius.”
Vincent turns around. “She’s not my wife. I don’t want that thing anywhere near me!” Vincent points at me, walking towards me angrily.
Esme growls and shifts in front of them. The shift is quick and painless. Esme growls loudly in warning at Vincent.
Then bolts out the door towards the gardens. We run through the forest towards the city. Esme stops and shifts at the back of a thrift store.
I search through a few bags and find a cute dress and a big fur jacket to keep me warm.
I start waking home.
“Sy?” a familiar voice says.
