The Full Moon Betrayal
The night air was thick with the scent of pine and anticipation.
I stood at the edge of the ceremonial clearing in Crescent Pack territory, my bare feet sinking into the cool grass. The full moon hung low and fat above the treetops, bathing everything in silver so bright it almost hurt to look at. Tonight was supposed to be the night everything changed.
My eighteenth birthday.
The night my wolf would finally awaken.
The night I would meet my fated mate.
My heart hammered so hard I could feel it in my throat. I smoothed the simple white cotton dress I'd spent weeks sewing, nothing fancy, just simple clean lines and a hem that brushed my calves. It was the best I owned. Omegas didn't get silk or lace, but tonight I felt almost pretty. Almost worthy.
Around me, the pack gathered in a loose circle. Elders in dark robes, warriors with scarred arms, she-wolves whispering behind their hands. Their eyes slid over me like I was a furniture, something useful but forgettable, something not worth a second glace. Aria Thorne. The quiet one. The one who cleaned the communal kitchens, mended torn clothes, and never shifted strong enough to earn respect.
But tonight the moon goddess would see me.
I lifted my chin and scanned the crowd until my gaze landed on him.
Damon Blackwood.
Future Alpha of Crescent Pack. Six-foot-four of pure muscle and arrogance, black hair tousled by the wind, emerald eyes sharp enough to cut through the air. Every unmated she-wolf in the pack had dreamed of him at one point or another. Including me.
Our eyes met across the fire pit.
The world tilted.
A golden thread snapped taut between us ,hot, electric, undeniable. The mate bond. It hit me like a punch to the chest, stealing my breath. My wolf...small, timid, barely more than a whisper inside me...lifted her head and howled in pure joy.
Him. It's him.
Damon’s lips curved into that signature smirk. He started walking toward me, the crowd parting like water. Pride swelled in my chest so fast it hurt. He was choosing me. Publicly. Under the moon goddess’s gaze. No more hiding in the shadows. No more being invisible.
He stopped a few feet away. Close enough that I could smell cedar and smoke on his skin.
“Aria Thorne,” he said, voice carrying across the clearing like a blade.
I smiled(small, hopeful, trembling).
The smirk vanished.
His eyes narrowed. Cold. Disgusted.
“I, Damon Blackwood,” he continued, each word deliberate, “reject you as my mate and future Luna.”
The bond snapped.
Pain exploded behind my ribs—white-hot, tearing, like someone had driven silver claws straight through my heart. I gasped, knees buckling. My hands flew to my chest as if I could hold the pieces together.
The pack gasped.
Then… laughter.
Soft at first, then louder. Someone...Lila, the beta’s daughter snorted. “Knew it. Weak little omega.”
Damon didn’t even look at me anymore. He turned to Lila, offering his arm. She took it with a triumphant smile, pressing herself against his side like she belonged there.
“You’re nothing,” he said, finally glancing back at me. “Unworthy. The bond ends here.”
My vision blurred with tears. The pain wasn’t just physical—it was soul-deep. My wolf whimpered inside me, curling into a ball, broken. I tried to speak, to beg, to ask why, but my throat closed.
Guards stepped forward. Rough hands grabbed my arms.
“Take her away,” Damon ordered, already turning back to the fire. “She’s banished. Let the rogues have her.”
“No...” The word tore out of me, raw and small.
They dragged me backward. My heels scraped the dirt. I twisted, looking over my shoulder at Damon one last time.
He wasn’t looking.
He was laughing at something Lila whispered in his ear.
The circle closed behind me. Faces I’d known my whole life, people who’d shared meals, who’d called me by name, now stared with pity or amusement. No one moved to help.
I stumbled when they released me at the tree line. The forest loomed dark and endless.
“Go,” one guard growled. “Don’t come back.”
I ran.
Branches whipped my face, tearing at my dress. My lungs burned. Tears streamed hot down my cheeks. Every step sent fresh pain spiking through my chest, the ghost of the broken bond refusing to fade.
I didn’t know where I was going. Just away. Far away from the laughter, from the silver light that had betrayed me, from the man who was supposed to love me forever and instead called me worthless.
My legs gave out near a small stream. I collapsed against a fallen log, sobbing so hard my whole body shook.
Why me?
What did I do wrong?
My wolf was silent now...curled tight, refusing to answer.
I pressed my forehead to the rough bark and cried until there was nothing left. Until the moon seemed to mock me from above, cold and indifferent.
That’s when I heard it.
A low, dangerous growl.
Not from the direction of the pack.
From deeper in the forest.
Something massive moved through the trees....silent, deliberate. The air grew heavier, charged with power that made the hairs on my arms stand up.
I froze.
A pair of golden eyes appeared in the darkness.
They locked on me.
And the growl turned into a single, possessive word that vibrated through my bones.
“Mine.”
