Chapter 1: The Graduation Betrayal
My name is Ama, I am 22 years from Accra. For 4 years, I sold pure water on the streets of Kaneshie to pay my boyfriend Kofi's fees at University of Ghana, Legon.
I believed love was sacrifice. I was wrong.
Today is Kofi's graduation. I wore my only good dress. I used my last 50 cedis to buy him a gift - a watch that says "Congratulations Graduate." I was so happy. I imagined he would call me to the stage and say "This is the woman who made me."
But he never saw me.
I saw him from far. He was in his black graduation gown, smiling. He was holding another girl's hand. A fair, beautiful girl in expensive lace. He kissed her forehead.
My heart stopped.
I ran to him. "Kofi!" I shouted.
He turned and looked at me like I was a stranger. His face changed. Cold.
"Ama, what are you doing here? You are embarrassing me," he whispered harshly.
"Embarrassing you? Kofi, I paid your fees for 4 years! I sold water under this sun for you!"
People started looking. The girl beside him laughed. "Kofi, who is this pure water seller?"
Kofi looked at me one last time and said the words that killed me.
"Ama, we are done. I need a woman of my class. Not a street hawker. Go back to your pure water."
The watch fell from my hand. Everyone at Legon was watching the poor girl cry on graduation day.
That day, I made a promise. If Kofi thinks he has seen the last of me, he is lying. I will rise. And he will regret this day for the rest of his life.
