Chapter 5. A greasy ‘Mr.’

Elina knew that she was her parent’s natural daughter, just like her siblings. But she just didn’t understand why they treated her so bad, like an outsider.

‘Elina, please. Just stay, and help me out. I can’t do this on my own.’ Alice held Elina by her arm and begged.

‘But, I don’t know anything about running a business.’ Elina would not want to say no to her sister, but she didn’t have a clue what to do.

‘It’s okay. I can teach you from tomorrow, hand by hand. Don’t forget, your major is finance in college.’ Alice was happy that Elina was not stubborn, and she put on a smile on her face: ’To be honest, I think you could do way better than I do in the company. Dad shouldn’t have picked me to run this company for the first place. You are the perfect one for it.’

‘Well, I think I can give it a go.’ Elina nodded her head.

The next morning, Alice took Elina to the company. And as an older sister, she didn’t withhold anything, and she told everything she knew to Elina. And Alice’s assistant, Sally Rumbleton, was also very nice to Elina. She would just pass the things to Elina when she needed them in time.

Three years of country life didn’t affect Elina’s learning ability. She was learning it quick.

Before the day was over, Elina went into Alice’s office to see if there were other things she could help with. But she saw Alice was lying on the table. She seemed painful with her belly covered by her hands.

‘Alice? Alice? Are you okay?’ Elina walked straight up and asked.

‘Ah..It is just a stomachache, not a big deal. I just took some pills, it should work.’ Alice was pale and sweaty.

‘You look awful! Let me get you to the hospital.’ Elina tried to help her up.

Alice shook her head and said:’It’s okay. I will be fine in a few minutes. I have a very important dinner tonight, I have to go.’

‘Alice, you can’t go to a dinner like this! You are not feeling good. Let’s go to the hospital now.’ Elina was worried about Alice.

‘No! Elina, I said I am fine! It took me months to get this project, and we needed it so bad! The Bernards could not afford losing any profitable projects now. The contracts are ready, all I need to do tonight is just show up, smile, shake hands and sign it!’ Alice was struggling to get up.

Elina bit her lips and said: ‘If that is all for the project, I can do that for you. Let me go to the dinner for tonight, and Sally takes you to the hospital.’

Alice hesitated for a while, but then she decided to let Elina take a shot:’Well, that is a solution. You need to get used to this anyway. I will let Sally go with you. Mr. Hershey is a bit handful. Sally will tell you how to handle him.’

After Elina and Sally sent Alice to the hospital, they went to the Hotel of Galaxy together.

They made a reservation of a booth, and they arrived early. But Mr. Hershey, a fat man in his fifties, was an hour late for their appointment. A mid age assistant was tagging along with him.

Sally leaned to Alice, and she whispered in her ears: ’That is Mr. Hershey from Torrents.’ Elina then stood up and reached out her hand for a handshake: ’Hello, Mr. Hershey.’

Mr. Hershey ignored her, and he looked around the booth with a grumpy face: ’Where is Alice Bernard? She just let two girls to do this with me? The hell she thinks who I am!’

‘Mr. Hershey, VP Bernard had a health issue in emergency, she is in the hospital now.’ Elina tried to explain.

‘Yes, Mr. Hershey. And we still take this project very seriously! VP Bernard would have come herself if she was alright. This is Ms. Elina Bernard, the younger daughter of the Bernards.’ Sally Rumberton explained as well.

‘The younger daughter of the Bernards?’ Mr. Hershey rubbed his bald head, and he felt a lot better. He nodded his head and said: ‘I have heard so much about you, Miss Bernard. Well, given that VP Bernard is not feeling well. I guess I can do this with Ms. Bernard. Take a seat.’

Elina was relieved, and she took the seat after Mr. Hershey sat down.

‘But this is still a very important dinner. I come all the way down here with sincerity, and it is not easy for me. Ms. Bernard, what do you think?’

Mr. Hershey checked Elina Bernard from head to toe. And they way he looked at Elina was horny and creepy. But Alice was a smart girl, she found an excuse to get away with this.

‘VP Bernard is sick. I apologize for her, Mr. Hershey.’ Elina stood up and made the apology again.

‘That is not how it works, Ms. Bernard!’ Mr. Hershey dragged his face again.

Sally passed a glass of wine to Elina: ’You have to drink it.’

Elina looked at Sally, and Sally nodded her head again. So Elina took a sip from the glass.

She was a bad drinker, and that only drink she took three years ago, gave a her a lesson the she would never forget. So she was strictly teetotal, now.

‘Ms. Bernard, this is some fine wine. It is such a waste to take a small sip like that.’ Mr. Hershey rubbed his bald head again. He was still not satisfied with this.

The project is so important for Alice, for their family. So Elina gnashed her teeth, and chuck the whole glass of wine.

‘Well, well, well. Bravo, Ms. Bernard. Cheers!’ Mr. Hershey gave her applaud, and he also drank his glass. He put on a smile of satisfaction.

‘Mr. Hershey, how about we sign the contract now.’ Elina felt like she took a punch right into her stomach, and she felt dizzy. She tried not to throw up, and she urged Sally to take out the contract from the bag.

‘Well, I will sign it. But I have had a very busy day without getting any food. Let me eat, let me drink, and we can sign this contract after that. Would you mind, Ms. Bernard?’

Mr. Hershey stared at Elina in a nasty way, he thought that if he kept pushing, tonight might be his lucky night.
