Actually, I kinda like the days back in the countryside.’ Elina was being honest about that, she did miss the day she spent with her grandma. It was peaceful and quiet, and she could have lived like that for a long time if it was not because of her grandma’s passing away. Her parents didn’t fond of her, and she was quiet reluctant of coming back to a place like this. Alice was the only reason she stayed in this house. ‘Well, that is just some silly talks. This is your home! You will like it here. Come on, get dressed and let’s get some breakfast downstairs.’ Alice wiped off her tears, and she smiled to Elina. The Bernards raised their head up when they heard the footsteps from upstairs. ‘Good morning, Elina. Come and get some breakfast. I asked Molly cooked your most favorite mac and cheese.’ Elina was a bit surprised by the smile on Kate Bernard’s face. That was her mother. Alice took Elina to the seat right next to her, and a full of dish of mac and cheese with sausages and bacons were placing right in front of Elina. ‘Well, when you done with your breakfast. Your mom and Alice will show you around in town, and get you some new clothes. Us and the Withers, we are going to have a family party tonight.’ Carl Bernard took a glance at her youngest daughter and added on:’You need some new clothes anyway. What you are wearing does not fit in here.’ Elina picked up the fork, and she nodded as a reply. This was new to her. She was always the one left to the house, and was not taken to any parties or events. Carl Bernard would took her mother, her sister, and even her younger brother, but not her. Three years ago, that thing happened. And Carl Bernard just discarded her like a piece of trash, and left her to her grandma in the country. And they acted like she had never existed for the past three years. No phone calls, no letter, no visits, no nothing. What a beautiful and brilliant girl!’ The old man Mr. Withers was quite happy, and his wife, Mrs. Withers checked Elina from head to toe with a great deal of compliment:’Look at you, Elina! You are just shining in this house, and you are just also as clever...’ As Mrs Withers spoke, she took a glance at her son, who was eating his thumbs when staring at Elina. Mrs Withers turned to Elina again, and gave her a bright smile. Elina smiled in awkwardness, she felt something strange in this dinner party, but she could not tell what it was. ‘All right then, please my friends, take a seat.’ Mr Withers asked everybody to sit down. Elina did so as she was told. But she could not help to pay attention to that fat boy who was still eating his thumb, and she felt very uncomfortable. Mr. Withers was a very wealthy man, who owned a reputation in Ashford. He had a lot of properties, and he was richer than the Bernards. However, Mr. Withers had been fooling around with girls when he was younger, and he didn’t have his own son until his mid-fourties. His son, unfortunately, is a retard. Elina didn’t know that her father was a friend to Ted Withers. Maybe they became friends in the past three years when she was gone. ‘Ted, I think Elina will make a good wife to Paul. My son, Paul, is my true heir. Elina should feel blessed that we didn’t judge her past and ask her to marry Paul. Not everyone got the chance to be one of the Withers.’ Carl Bernard nodded his head with a humble attitude:’You are right, Mr. Withers. Elina is not right about this, and we will talk her into this. I apologize for what her rudeness.’ Alice Bernard also stood up and took a bow:’I am sorry, Mr and Mrs. Withers. I need to keep an eye on Elina.’ As she spoke, she rushed out of the room for Elina. Elina didn’t know where she was going to, but then she bumped into someone at the hallway. ‘I am sorry...’ When she looked up, she was shocked by what she saw and she paused for a few seconds. It was the same pair of heartless and condescending eyes she had in her nightmare. She would never forget that for the rest of her life. ‘I am sorry.’ She struggled to finish her sentences, then she took off running.
