Chapter 9 bracelet

‘Alice, what a pleasant surprise!’ Rania Layne smiled to Alice, then she turned to Elina:’Hi, Ms. Bernard. Are you picking a gift for Doris’s birthday as well?’ Rania Layne heard that Elina was also invited to Dorothy Adler’s birthday. She knew they went way back, and Elina was the fiance with Dorothy Adler’s blessing. So, Rania gave up and went abroad for her graduate study. But then things changed drastically, Rania now could talk like a hostess to Elina. ‘Hi, Ms. Layne. Yes, that is why I am here.’ Elina replied in manner. ‘What a coincidence, I am also here to pick the birthday present.’ Rania Layne smiled and said:’What kind of a gift have you picked? I am kind of worry I pick the same gift as you do, and that will be embarrassing.’ ‘Ha, relax Rania. It will be impossible for her to pick the same gift you do. She just can’t afford any fancy gifts.’ The woman standing right next to Rania took a disdainful glance at Elina’s box. ‘Yes, Ms. Layne. My gift is just trivial compared to yours. Me and Alice have to go now. You ladies take your time.’ As Elina spoke, she took Alice and left the store. ‘Rania, what are you being so nice to that woman! She is just a w***e! The whole celebrities in Ashford know what she did to Samuel. She thought she could be an Adler simply by climbing on a man’s bed, and got dumped like a piece of trash. But you, Rania, is different. You will be Samuel’s lawful wife.’ The woman was still running her mouth when the Bernard sisters were gone. ‘Okay, just stop it!’ Rania didn’t feel flattered at all, instead, her jealousy and insecurity was burning inside her. Though the sisters were at a distance, they heard everything that woman said, which was venomous and irritating. On the day of the birthday party, Elina arrived at the house early. And the house of Adler didn’t have many guests. Adler was a noble and wealthy family with tradition and rich history, but the members of the family were few. Dorothy Adler had a son and a daughter. The old lady didn’t want her daughter got involved in Adler’s business, so she then sent her abroad for college. She then met her husband there, and started up a new company, however she was not doing very well. She had asked the old lady for financial support for her business, but the old lady didn’t do anything. So she rarely came back to visit her. Samuel Adler’s father was taking care of the family business until he got into a car accident. He then became paralyzed and was taken care by Samuel’s mother. Samuel took over the family business when he was still young. Samuel’s family would hope him to get married soon and had his own blood for heritage. But thing just didn’t go their way. ‘Well, well, well. Look at who this is.’ Elina walked into the yard, and heard a voice behind her. ‘Hello, Ms. Adler.’ Elina turned around, and greeted the woman who just spoke. It was Amber Adler Towland, the old lady’s daughter. She would prefer ‘Ms. Adler’ than ‘Mrs. Towland’. For her husband’s last name didn’t bring her anything nice to remember. ‘So you are here to celebrate my mother’s birthday right?’ Amber Adler Towland checked on Elina from head to toe in a condescending way. ‘Well, Ms. Bernard-I hope you don’t mind me calling you that, since you are no longer Samuel’s fiance.’ ‘However suits you, Ma’am.’ Elina replied. ‘Where have you been for the past few years?’ Amber Adler Towland had been holding grudge to Elina, she didn’t like Elina from the beginning. But she didn’t show it when Elina was still Samuel’s fiance. ‘I...’ Elina was about to say something, but then she got interrupted by Amber Adler again. ‘Oh, now I remember. You went abroad right? If I were you, I would probably never come back, and find a good guy who doesn’t know your past. Samuel is doing great with Rania, and they will be a perfect couple...’ Elina didn’t need to be insulted by this woman in vanity, so she didn’t let the woman finished: ‘Mind your own business, Mrs. Towland. You do marry someone abroad, but your business is going downhill-at least that is what I heard. You set me a perfect model of how to live abroad.’ Elina then added on:’Plus, I am here to celebrate Mrs. Adler’s birthday. It has nothing to do with Samuel Adler.’ Elina knew that Amber Adler had always held an opinion toward her. And Amber Adler got chocked by Elina. ‘If you don’t have anything else to say, then I must go now, Mrs. Towland.’ Elina left as she spoke. ‘Happy birthday, Mrs. Adler.’ Elina took out the gift and passed it to Dorothy Adler. ‘Oh, thank you, thank you! Darling, what a wonderful gift! You are just so sweet and considerate. I like this bracelet.’ The old lady looked so happy, she took the bracelet out from the gift box and put it on her wrist. ‘Oh, it looks just wonderful. It fits me perfectly. I have always wanted a fine bracelet. Thank you darling.’ ‘I am just so glad that you like it!’ Elina was happy that she picked the right gift that pleased the old lady. They chatted for a while, and Elina was about to leave. But Dorothy Adler wouldn’t let her go. ‘Why leave in such a hurry? This is a family party, you should stay for the meal. I insist you stay, Elina. You are not going to let me down on my own birthday, are you?’ Mrs. Adler held Elina by her arm and asked her to stay, and Elina gave in. Samuel Adler and Rania Layne walked into the living room together, and they were not surprised to see Elina. ‘Mrs. Adler, happy birthday. Here is a little birthday present for you.’ Rania passed the old lady the gift she picked. ‘Well thank you, Rania.’ The old lady smiled at her, and she opened the box and took a look. It was also a bracelet, but it had a sapphire on it, which was quite expensive. ‘Rania pick the same gift as Elina’s. What a lovely coincidence.’ Mrs Adler then passed Rania’s gift to Ms. Jarrett, her housekeeper. However, she didn’t take Elina’s bracelet off. Rania saw that, and she was quite upset about it. She kept the smile on her face and said:’Yes, I can’t believe it when I met Ms. Bernard at the jewelry store. ’
