Chapter 1: The Proposal
Elena walked quickly down the busy street, her hands trembling as she held the medical bill tightly against her chest. Tears pricked her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She had been working double shifts for months, taking every job she could find, just to pay for her mother’s treatment. But the cost was far higher than she had imagined, and the deadline was only three days away. If she didn’t find the money soon, she would lose the only family she had left.
“What am I going to do?” she whispered, her voice cracking. She felt completely helpless, trapped in a situation no amount of hard work could fix.
Lost in her despair, she didn’t notice the sleek, black luxury car gliding silently toward her until it came to a sudden halt right beside her. The window rolled down smoothly, revealing a man sitting in the back seat. He wore expensive sunglasses and a sharp suit that looked worth more than everything Elena owned combined.
“You,” he called out. His voice was deep, calm, and carried a commanding weight that made her freeze instantly.
Elena hesitated, stepping back slightly. “Me, sir?”
“Yes. Come closer. I have something to say to you.”
She stood still, unsure what to do. Talking to strangers was dangerous… but looking at the paper in her hand, she realized she had nothing left to lose. She stepped toward the car.
The man removed his sunglasses, revealing sharp, dark eyes that seemed to see right through her. His face was handsome but cold, with a serious expression that showed he was not a man who smiled often.
“My name is Julian Sterling,” he said without introducing himself further. “And I have a proposition for you. One that will solve every single problem you have right now.”
Elena’s heart raced. “A proposition… sir?”
“I need a wife,” Julian stated plainly, as if he was ordering a cup of coffee. “Not for love, and certainly not for forever. Just for one year. A contract marriage. You will live in my home, appear by my side at events, and play the role of a devoted wife. In return, I will pay you enough money to cover every debt you have… and enough to ensure you never worry about money again for the rest of your life.”
Elena stared at him, stunned. A fake marriage? To this powerful, intimidating man?
“Why me?” she managed to ask softly.
Julian looked her up and down, his expression unchanging. “I need someone who is in need, someone who understands this is a business deal, and someone who knows how to follow rules. You look like a person who is desperate enough to do what is necessary. Am I wrong?”
He was right. She was desperate.
“There will be rules,” he continued firmly. “Rule number one: no falling in love. This is strictly an arrangement. Rule number two: no questions about my business or my past. Rule number three: when the year ends, you walk away and we never see each other again. Do you understand?”
Elena thought of her mother lying in the hospital bed. She thought of the bills, the stress, and the fear of losing everything.
She took a deep breath, looked straight into his eyes, and made her choice.
“I understand… and I accept.”
