The One Night Stand

Chapter 8

Alyssa's P.O.V

I woke up, earlier than usual... and got ready. I was determined not to feel awkward in any way about the job. I would be a good staff. I went into the bathroom, taking some time to have a good bath and then came out, thinking of what I would wear. I settled for a gray wrap dress I got with my black stilettos.. I dried out my hair and then straightening it. I put on some powder, mascara and a nice colored lip gloss and left for my official official first day.

"Good morning Lyss" Mike greets with a smile and I do same.

"Hello Mike.. good morning to you too." I sign into work and go to the elevator, ready to get this day going.

"Have a good day." He calls out and I wave at him. Mike was a good guy... I guess we could be friends. I entered into the elevator and pressed the 'last floor' button. I checked my wrist watch and realized I was ten minutes early. I breathed out, pushing down any nervousness I felt as the elevator doors opened.

I looked into the office where I saw Thelma and the other guy yesterday and it seemed it was only the guy had come. I decided to introduce myself. I knocked on the door and immediately, he opened it, a frantic look on his face.

"Who- oh... good morning Miss Brown" he said with a smile on his face.

"Uhh... hi." I said, feeling awkward as he knew my name but I didn't know his.

"What can I do for you?" He asked, opening the door wide enough for me to enter.

"Uhmm... nothing actually. I wanted to introduce myself before I went into the office but it seems you already know my name and I don't know yours." I said with an awkward laugh whereas, he smiled.

"I'm Jake.. I asked Thelma for your name yesterday cause I didn't want to seem lost if Mr. Ross wanted me to get something from you." He said and I nodded my head.

"Okay... uhm.. well nice meeting you Jake. I have to go now but I'll see you later. " I waved and went to the office to open it when I realized it was a Biometric door lock that needed Daniel's fingerprint and in alternative, a PIN. I sighed out as I went back to Jake's office.

"Jake... please do you know the pin to Mr. Ross's office?" I asked whereby he just looked at me.

"I thought you knew it so that's why you came up here."

"I don't and I figured I would be in the office before Mr. Ross came to work but I forgot it was a biometric lock." I said with my face feelinga little bit hot all of a sudden... God I was embarrassed.

"Wait... why did you come up here?"

"To work?" I said in an obvious tone and then he looked at me with sympathy.

"Mr. Ross doesn't stay here.. he doesn't work here." He said confusing me.

"Huh? Wha- I don't understand what you mean." He sighed out.

"This is his second office. He works on the floor beneath this one. I thought he would have told you already and you probably came up here for something he needed so you would be with the pin. I didn't know he didn't inform you that this was not his actual working office."

I stared at him like a creep for a while before I finally came back to my senses. Checking the time, I realized it was a bit late making me rush to the elevator.

"How do I know its his office?" I asked as I waited for the elevator to open It was just five minutes after eight.

"You would know... trust me. Sorry about all these though. " He apologized but I waved it off as I stepped into the elevator.

"Its fine.. I should be thanking you for informing me. I'll see you another time Jake. Have a good day." I give him a thumbs up just as the elevator doors closed. I checked my time as I was confused as to why it took so long for the elevator to come. I realized people must be coming into work... why doesn't he have his own personal elevator? I thought... I once again checked the time an- Jeez! It was 8:17 already?

The ' ding' brought me out of my nervous reverie. I rushed out so I could reach the office as quickly as possible before he would arrive.

I looked around as I saw men and women moving from one point to the other.The coffee machine at a corner working already... people greeting each other and wishing one another a good day. Wow was all I thought. Focus! I saw a hallway of offices parallel to each other and down the hallway, an office in the middle which read 'CEO' in big bold letters. I immediately started walking there while some people glanced at me but did nothing more than glancing but all I was doing was praying he hadn't arrived yet.

I stood in front of the office as my heartbeat accelerated. To say I was nervous was an understatement... This was worse than when I got called to the principal's office in high school and I was always nervous when I was ever called there! Just go in Lyss. I urged myself. I pushed down all nervous thoughts, turned the door knob and walked into the office.

There sitting was an expressionless Mr. Daniel Ross, my CEO and a lady beside his desk, holding some folders whereby I cursed at the universe mentally for not answering my prayers.

"Good morning sir." I greeted to which I got no response but a chuckle from the lady and when we made eye contact, she threw me a nasty look. Jeez! I just came in!

"What is the time Miss Brown?" Daniel finally spoke up. I checked my wrist watch and sighed out.

"The time is 8:22 sir." I said with my head down.

"And why are you just coming into work?" Now I was going to speak.

"No sir.. I didn't just come into work. I-"

"I hate tardiness Miss Brown because tardiness equals to stupidity. I mean.. why bother coming to work when all you're going to do is come late and not get anything done?" Ouch... I wasn't expecting this at all.

"Sir.. please let me expl-"

"I do not tolerate this type of attitude and never will.. this is your first actual official work day Miss Brown and that is the only reason I am letting you off. Repeat this next time and you'll have your things out of here... am I clear?" I found it hard to make out a 'Yes' as my throat was clogged with suppressed tears.

"Did I make myself clear Miss Brown?" I trying clearing my throat so I could speak.

"Yes sir.. you did." My voice just came out hoarse as I couldn't look him in the eye... I continously scratched the inside of my palms as I held in the tears.

"I need you to look at me and tell me you understood what I said." How didn't I know he was this much of an asshole? I finally got the courage and looked at him, trying not to let the tears fall and when he looked at me, his face fell a little bit but I ignored it.

"I understood what you said sir and I apologize for being late. It will never happen again." He nodded his head and then turned to look at the lady beside him and almost immediately, he smirked at her.

"We will continue our conversation later.. why don't you run along?" He says to her and she giggles and starts leaving the office not before winking at him and giving me a disgusted look.

Once she's out of the office, there's complete silence. Me standing awkwardly and him sitting down, using his laptop. I hated this.. I didn't want to be here right now. I wanted to quit right now.

"Sir please do I have an office I would stay in?" I asked, trying my best to sound polite and strong.

"You can obviously see the office." He gestured to the cubicle by the corner. I nodded my head and gave him a plastic smile.

"Right... obviously. Thank you." And I say nothing as I walk to the office.

"Miss Brown, come here for a second." I breathed out and turned, walking back to his table as he looks through some papers and then gives them to me.

"I need these to be sorted out before you go home so I would know the meetings I have tomorrow." I nod my head and wordlessly go to my office.

Thankfully, it was the lunch break and I needed one right now. I was literally just approaching half of what this man asked me to sort out. I was hungry and tired.I needed food. I gathered up the courage to go as Mr. Asshole if I could go for my lunch break. I stood up from my seat and walked to his desk, nervousness overwhelming me.

"Sir please I was wondering if I could go for my lunch break? I would come back imme-"

"You can't." He said without hesitating, not raising up his head to look at me as he went through papers.

"Oh.. " I start walking back to my office when he calls me back.

"As my secretary, aren't you supposed to ask if I would like to have lunch?" He asked me and I just stared at him. This guy was a major asshole.

"I'm sorry sir... Would you like to have lunch?" and then he chuckled lightly. Wow! He could laugh.. I was entertaining to him. I hated that.

"No.. thank you. "

"Miss Brown I'm not trying to be a bad guy here but I need you to finish sorting out those documents before you leave today that's why I am not letting you go for your lunch break. If you really need something to eat, there are some biscuits at the coffee machine down the hall. " I scoffed without even knowing at his ignorant, selfish, jerk stricken self.

"Thank you so much for the concern sir.. but I also needed you to excuse me to go and make copies of some documents. "

"Sure... go ahead." I say nothing and just take the documents and leave the office... starting my lonely journey down the hallway.

I see staff meeting up to go have lunch together and I wondered.. why was mine different? Why did my one night stand have to be my boss and an asshole at that?! And why did I feel like crying? Ugh.

It seemed the universe just wasn't satisfied with how bad my day was already... I just needed a cup of juice to be spilt on me making me drop the documents. Great.

"Oh my God... I am so sorry." I looked up to see who the human was and to my surprise, it seemed like I was staring at a little Daniel Ross... he was probably his brother. I think.

"Its fine." I bent down to pick the papers, hoping they weren't destroyed and fortunately they weren't.

"Please let me help."

"No. Its fine.. I'm already done."

"I'm sorry once again... why don't I get you a new dress since this one is juice stricken?" Yup. He was his brother. I could tell not just from his looks but the aura he gave off... he had the playboy looks.. blonde hair but beautiful dark green orbs.. just like Daniel's but Daniel was hotter. Snap out of it!

"Don't worry about it.. I'm fine. Thanks for the offer though." I wave at him and continue my journey down the hallway.

I finally reached the photocopying machine, and wordlessly did my job. I realized everywhere was quiet making me look around and it seemed everyone had finally left. I felt a droplet of something like water on my hand and it kept on falling continuously... where did it come- oh. It was me. I was crying. Why are you crying? I asked myself this question but it felt impossible to answer because I couldn't bring myself to accept that fact.

I heard the elevator doors open making me to sniff and clean my eyes.. I really didn't want anyone to see me crying.

"My favourite staff in the whole company. " The familiar voice I recognized as Mr. Myers said behind me and I turned to smile at him but failed woefully at doing that.

"Hi Mr. Myers." I make another attempt to send cheery but also failed at that making him drop his smile.

"What happened? Why are you crying?" He asked and that was what I needed to hear to have another crying session.

"Hey.. its okay.. everything's going to be fine." He gives me a hug and then I realized I needed to find out what exactly I did in my past life because the elevator doors opened and there standing was Thelma and there was only one thing in my mind. s**t.
