The Foxx Among Wolves

Chapter 4

*Seth's POV*

Patrick had mindlinked one of the omegas to fetch Ms. Foxx while we waited in my office. I heard the elevator doors at the end of the hallway open and was suddenly flooded with the smell of cinnamon and vanilla again. Gage had started to pace and whine in the back of mind like an impatient pup. What in the world had gotten into him?

As Patrick let Ms. Foxx into the room i realized what he was going on about.

Mate! Mate! Mate!

Gage lurched forward attempting to take control which must have scared her because I heard her gulp as I reigned Gage back in. My god she was breath taking. Her eyes were shining green like emeralds in the sunshine, only to be even brighter against her long red hair. She was easily almost 2 feet short than me.

"Pleasure to meet your, Ms. Foxx." I said tightening my jaw in an attempt not to drool on her. Her cheeks flushed and her heart beat sped up. Maybe she felt the mate bond, too.

We spent the better half of the next 2 hours listening to her story. When she talked about the night of Flinn's murder her voice started to break and her eyes got misty so she quickly moved on to the leads she had had over the years and where they took her. Hearing her describe the torture she put some of these werewolves through had me strangely fearful but amazed. She not only lived among and respected our kind, but she also had knowledge in how to destroy us as a human.

After she finished, i could tell she was exhausted so I sent her to rest while Patrick, Felix, and I went over the case and discussed what assistance we could provide.

As Parrick closed the door behind her, he shot me a worried look.

"Was that what I think it was, Alpha?" He asked quietly.

"Yes, that woman is my second chance mate." I sighed and put my head in my hands. I felt a pain shoot through my heart for a moment then it was gone. I could hear a muffled cry in the elevator. She did feel it. But she wasnt happy, she was crying.

"Hey, that's great! Shes beautiful and badass, too!" Patrick tried to lighten my mood. "I know it's not ideal timing but the Moon Goddess has a purpose and a plan. I know she does."

"Hes right, Alpha. The Moon Goddess is blessing you." Felix agreed.

She is a very great blessing, indeed. Gage said softly. Moon Goddess has given us a gift. Someone very special. We must cherish, love, and protect her.

"You guys are right. But what if she doesnt want another mate? do you think shes even thought about that in the last 5 years?" I looked up and Patrick was biting his cheek. He only did that when he was thinking really hard.

"Well, I guess we just take it slow and you can get to know her. We all know she felt it, her heart beat went crazy!" He said finally.

"I'm going for a run to clear my head. Call your teams in and go over these files; see if you can come up with a few routes we can take on this one." I said as I got up from my chair. I went straight out the front of the packhouse and to the treeline. I stripped and shifted and let Gage take control.

He bounded through the woods, playing with branches and chasing rabbits. He was the happiest he had been in 3 years. I knew it was the mate bond. When his bond with Hera, Claudia's wolf, was severed, I've never felt pain so intense. I thought he would burst from my skull.

After a while we came upon the cottages at the farthest end from the pack house.

This is where she is staying, but you knew that.

Yes, but I brought you here for a purpose.

We slowed to a halt and shifted back. From the trees, I could see her red hair pulled up in a bun. She had traded her business attire for a long white tshirt that came to her mid thigh and leggings. She seemed lost in thought, writing to someone with a notebook in front of her sitting on the tiny front porch. Her face was scrunched and she looked so cute. I just wanted to kiss her.

I backed up, surprised at my own thoughts, and stepped on a twig. Her head shot up as she looked around. I knew she would sense me there, might as well come on out. I found a stash of clothes the wolves hide for easy access after shifting. I threw on some shorts and a tshirt; she was still looking around. I knew she could hear me rustling around.

"Hey, sorry to scare you." I said apologetically. "I just wanted to make sure you made it back to your cottage okay." I stumbled over my words, trying not to look creepy.

"Its okay, I appreciate you checking on me. I'm fine, really." she half smiled and started to blush. I couldnt read her emotions at all, which made me more nervous. "I know why you're really here." she said quietly. If I didnt have werewolf hearing I wouldnt have heard her.

"Oh? So you feel it, too, then?" I asked, I tried not to let any of the anxiety I was feeling deep into my voice and failed.

"Yes, I do. But that's not why I came here. And I have a mission to complete before I could even think about being with someone again." she said, her voice cracked a little. Her eyes started to water and tears fell from her eyes. "I'm not going to reject you but I do ask for some time and space first. I have work to be done."

I blinked a few times. I didnt expect her to be so honest and forthcoming about the mate bond.

"I understand that. And I really appreciate you being honest with me. Maybe we can get to know each other better over the course of this mission."

"I think that's a good idea." she finally smiled her first genuine smile since she got here.

"I'm Beatrice Foxx." she stretched her hand out to me.

"Seth Haight, I'm very glad to meet you." I grabbed her hand and her eyes widened for a moment. I knew she felt the same sparks I did when we touched. She ended the handshake and blushed, tucking a stray hair behind her ear. How I wished I could do that. But not yet.

"Can I escort you back to the pack house to meet with my teams?" I asked, a glimmer of excitement in my voice.

"Sure. Let me get changed." she smirked and went back into the cottage.

I mindlinked Patrick as I waited.

I think I actually have a shot with her.

See? I told you Alpha, the Moon Goddess doesnt make mistakes.

Gage was thumping his tail furiously in my head. Maybe I did deserve to be happy again.
