CHAPTER 4

I couldn’t feel my body as they moved me from the ward to the theater with the use of a stretcher. According to them, it was for the implantation of the client’s sperm. Upon reaching the theater, I could feel my body being moved. I felt a little relieved as I lay on something comfy. I felt I could finally rest a little bit before the reality of life hit me back. “How’s her heart rate?” the sound of the main surgeon resonated around the room. I couldn’t see what he looked like as I was slowly losing consciousness, but I could still see something. Two liquids in different sample containers. The Billionaires were one of them or both? Something just wasn’t right about one of the liquids. Maybe I’ll find out after the surgery. “Checking in on her vitals,” the voice came once more. “She’s stable. Oxygen is connected; everything is in place. We can start,” the voice echoed in my ears as my eyes began to shut. I was lost—more lost than any other person in the room. The smell of antiseptics sipped into my nose, finding its way through my sensory neurons and finally to my head. I gasped as I woke up, exhausted like I had run a hurdle the last night. “See who’s woken up,” Helen’s voice crept in. She was wearing a much more beautiful uniform; she was promoted according to her tag. “What do you want, Helen?” I questioned. She was the least person I wanted to see next to me after waking up. “I just came to check up on you and apologize for treating you like an outcast. I never knew you were just here for business and nothing moree,” she confessed, taking a seat next to me. “So where’s Sterling?” I asked. “He’s out of town. I traveled out two days back during your surgery and was replaced by the new doctor, Xander,” she responded. Her tone was thin and full of empathy. “What really happened?” I inquired. It was off to see a woman like her crying, even though they were the ones who cried the most. “He cut me off. He told me I wasn’t good enough for him that he had a wife and two kids, which he cared for more than anyone in the world. He said my feelings didn’t matter and I shouldn’t talk to him anymore,” she teared up, falling into my arms. “It’s okay. I know how that feels. The feeling of rejection, scrutinized, cast out by everyone, and just wandering into a place where you know nothing about,” I blurted out, not knowing what I was saying. After some moments of tears, it was finally time for Helen to return to work. She had become a supervisor due to her high intelligence and visual prowess, but the feeling of losing Sterling to his wife still stuck to her more than ever. “How are you feeling, Miss Darcie?” his tone was domineering. Almost like Sebastian; maybe it was him. I rolled towards the sound, motioning towards the door to see who It was. “And who are you?” I asked, staring at his perfect jawline, masculine physique, handsome face, and most attractive broad chest. He was far more perfect than Sebastian in looks. “I’m Doctor Xander. I’m in charge of your ward along with Mr. Sterling. So I’ll be in charge of taking care of you till you give birth to the child,” he explained. “Oh, you’re the transfer doctor,” I let out. “You can say that,” he said, moving closer. With a sigh, he checked the monitor next to me, analyzing my vitals and heartbeat. “Perfect,” he added. “So do I get to see you often?” The words fell straight out of my mouth. I mean, who wouldn’t want a handsome doctor to take care of them during their stay in the hospital? “I’m one ring away if you need me,” he stated, touching the bell next to my bed. As days passed, Xander was the one taking care of me. He wasn’t allowed to get me into the shower due to our gender differences, but he was able to check every inch of my body to ensure I was alright. I liked how cute he was when he was performing his duty, and I felt this pregnancy was my gateway to seeing things in a new way. My father had been released on the day of my operation, and according to Susie, he had been thrown into rehab so he wouldn’t cause anymore fuss. I could finally live in peace. “Hey darling,” Sebastian called out to me as he entered the ward. I was terrified. I never expected him to come visit me given how stressed out he said he was after returning from the mission. I had told him that I had come up with a fever, but it seemed the pregnancy was a little over as it shot out a bit. “How are you doing, honey? I never thought you’d come visit me today,” I stammered. It was hard to see him looking at me helplessly. I wanted something to happen—anything that could get him away from me before he found out the truth. “Why did you do it?” he questioned. “Do what?” I responded, trying to hide the guilt in my voice. “This!” he pointed at my abdomen, which still had stitches from the operation. “It’s not what you think it is,” I let out in the defense. “Then what is it then? You can’t keep on telling me this is a fever; just come clean, Darcie,” he yelled. He was furious; his breathing had risen, and his chest kept on pushing back and forth. “I had to do it, Sebastian. It was the only way I could save my father from getting killed.” “You could have waited for me or put a call through to me.”. “I did, but you didn’t pick up the damn phone. I texted you, but you didn’t reply. I thought it was because of your mission, so I had no choice. Waiting wasn’t an option; he was given a week to live. An minute late would have been enough to slaughter him.”. “They wouldn’t have. They know who I am in this country.”. “They also know my father as a chronic debtor, Sebastian. Let’s just put this all aside; it shouldn’t get in between the both of us,” I declared. “Then maybe you should have thought about my opinion before becoming a surrogate mother.”.
