CHAPTER SIX The baron guided us through his spooky woods and in half a mile the thick canopy began to clear. I glimpsed the stars for the first time in two days and they twinkled down at me like old friends. The open view also allowed us to see the imperious castle of the Grau vampires. The imposing fortress was a sight to behold as I tilted my head back to take in the full view of the high stone foundation from which the castle itself seemed to grow. The battlements stood some two hundred feet above us with their sharp archer gaps and high cone-topped towers with spires that pierced the sky. A great age lingered in the air that reminded me of its owner and the gray stones of his keep were not a little unlike his gray hairs. A narrow road wound around the rocky hill like a snake. T
