Chapter 3

Kira made up her mind that if today would be her last day on Earth as she escaped through her room window, let it be. But she must check on her man. She expelled a long breath from her lungs and as she approached his front door, her body shuddered in the process because she couldn't tell what was behind the door. She gathered some courage and pushed the door. The first thing she noticed, the door knob was broken, panic set in. But Kira didn't stop, as she entered the house, Daniel's house was upside down. His old recliner was turned upside down, His sofas which Kira had bought for him with her salary had been torn with something sharp judging from its disastrous state. His TV had been smashed, everything in the house was in disarray and Kira started feeling something was sucking breath from her lungs as she held her stomach. “Daniel…” She muttered to herself wondering what may have happened to him, she'd started wishing she hadn't left him hours ago. What could have happened to Daniel? Out of nowhere she heard sobs, very faint sobs they were almost inaudible but Kira heard them and her ear stood alert, she turned to the area where she thought she heard the sound. Her reflexes had come into action. She was utterly confused and afraid but she was determined to see what it was that was crying when she heard the sobs the second time. It was behind the door, the bedroom door. Kira picked up a baseball baton that was lying somewhere on the ground, rolled her shoulders, and steadied herself before opening the door. A cool wave of shock and disbelief ran through her when she saw Daniel sitting at the end of the wall, hugging his knees and crying. “Daniel…” The words slipped from her mouth at the same time with the baseball baton from her hands as she ran without a minute of hesitation to check on Daniel. “Hey, My Love,” She didn't ask any questions, she just pulled him into a hug. Patting his back endearingly. She kissed the top of his head. Daniel's tears soaked the Tee she'd worn. She didn't bother to ask him why he was crying because she also calmed herself as she did him. Her heart had jumped out of her throat somewhere between when she stepped into the house. Her breathing was erratic and so was his. After rocking them both for a while, Kira decided to talk to him. “Daniel,” she whispered, “We need to leave,” she explained. “Why?” Daniel asked between his silent sobs. “Because we are in trouble, there is not much time left for us. We have to get out of the country,” Kira also more than anything wanted to ask why Daniel's house was scattered because she knew Daniel was an orderly and neat kind of person. She also knew that whatever happened here could potentially end Daniel's life, but she'd thrown that at the back of her mind. Save for later. “Where are we going?” “We are leaving the country, right now, I don't want my father to find me, he's going to marry me off to some crippled man tomorrow,” Daniel's body stilled at the news. Kira sprang up on her feet, “Let's go,” She gave Daniel her hand but he didn't take it, “We don't have time.” “I can't go,” He said, the pain in his voice was palpable. He'd had to come with the fact that he felt powerless whenever it came to helping Kira or making her happy, but today, he didn't only feel powerless, he'd felt useless. Kira crouched down before him, her brows furrowed in confusion, “What…what do you mean you can't go?” Despite the desperate need to flee, Kira knew something was wrong and it broke her even more but she held herself together. For him. Daniel couldn't find it in him to speak, he'd wanted to tell her to go and marry the crippled man and be happy but he knew Kira wouldn't accept, she'd say she loved him. Well, he loved her too. She cupped his face, “Daniel, we're running out of time, we need to hit the road,” She said, calmly. Daniel shook his head, “I can't go with you,” he peeled her hands off his face, his strange behavior was unnerving. “Why?” Kira's gaze darted between his eyes, but he did his best to avoid her gaze, to hide the pain he was feeling. Daniel swallowed the painful lump in his throat before speaking “I have a tracker on my neck. If I try to leave the country they'll kill me,” Kira gasped in shock, her eyes spontaneously scanning his neck for any sign of the tracker. How did a tracker get into Daniel's neck? She’d thought to herself. “Who put it?” “The guys…” Daniel swallowed hard, “...the guys I owe 100k,” Daniel said. “You owe someone 100k? How come you never told me?” “I…didn't want to disturb you, you were already doing so much for me, how could I repay you? I couldn't add to your burdens, I don't want to drag you into my mess, go back home, stay with your family, maybe we weren't meant to be together after all,” Daniel warned her. “Hey, don't say that you'll break my heart,” “It's the truth. Everybody was right, I'm useless and I'm not good for you,” Daniel willed his eyes to look into Kira's teary ones. “No. No. No. Don't say that, we are good, we can work, let's run away and start all over. Okay?” “I wished we had done this earlier but it's too late now, they'll blow my brains out if they notice where I'm going,” Daniel explained. “So, what are we gonna do?” “I don't know.” Kira sat down beside him, ruffling her hair frustratedly. “So if you give these guys 100k you can leave the country right?” “Yeah,” Daniel answered. But the issue was Kira's bank account was exhausted, she didn't have as much allowance as her sister and her step-sister would rather die than help her out. “How am I going to get 100k in such a short time?” Kira said audibly but to herself. “I know. But I can't go there,” Daniel said. “Where?” “You know that man that has that sports car that lives ten blocks away?” “Yeah, I think I know him,” Kira nodded vaguely. “I heard him telling someone to come pick 100k from his house today,” “You want me to steal?” “I don't want you to. But that's the only way we are getting this thing off my neck and we don't have any other option at the moment,” Kira breathed in and out, knowing that one wrong move meant a lot at this moment. But there was a saying, that desperate needs called for desperate measures, and Kira was about to apply that law if it meant she would not lose Daniel. She stood up and was about to go, as they didn't have time but Daniel's voice stopped her, “Wait,” he said. “Take this,” He put a gun in her hand. Kira jerked it off her hand, “Where did you get that?” she asked, with a grimace. “One of the guys that came here left it,” Kira knew there was no way Daniel would be lying, but she'd never used a gun before. “Do I need this? I can't shoot someone” She reasoned. “You don't have to shoot, just scare anyone that comes in your way with it,” Daniel stuffed it into her hand again and she took it this time. She got to the house and broke in, it was easier to get in than she'd thought. She saw the money sitting on the coffee table near the kitchen area, she didn't need to use the gun because no one was there. She retrieved the money and started coming out. Immediately, she stepped out and she heard the clicking of weapons and the beaming of headlights that made it difficult for her to see through, “Freeze. Drop your weapon and Put your hands up,” That was when she realized it was the police. “I said drop your weapon and put your hands up,” She couldn't see them but she knew they were aiming a gun at her. “Please don't shoot!” Kira cried, speedily dropping the gun and the bag of money. The police came behind her and cuffed her hands from the back.
