Chapter 5

1073 Words
It felt good to breathe in the fresh air of freedom. The past seven years had been the most agonizing and depressing years of her life. Kira was just released from prison. Her child was taken from her five minutes after she'd birthed her, later she got news that her family rejected the baby, which means her child will be going to foster care or an orphanage. It was heartbreaking to Kira, she just held unto the hope that one day she'll leave the confines of prison and she'll get to see her baby and her father too. Once her feet touched the outsides of the prison, the first thing on her mind was to see Daniel. He didn't come to see her in prison, she feared that he was in danger or worse, dead. Kira, choosing to be optimistic, went over to the house where Daniel used to live. Seven years was a long time, and if Daniel was still alive there were chances that he may not be living there anymore. But she knocked on the door and held her breath internally hoping that Daniel would open the door. She wondered what he'd looked like. An old woman with glasses opened the door, “Hi! Good morning,” Kira greeted with her brightest smile. The old lady wasn't fazed by Kira's friendly gesture. “Can I help you?” Her voice was anything but polite. Kira went straight to the point, “I'm looking for someone named Daniel, does he live here?” “Wrong house,” The old lady shut the door in Kira's face. Kira left the property but that wasn't going to stop her search for Daniel, even if he was dead, she had to confirm it. Kira walked around, making calls, trying everything she could to get in touch with Daniel but nothing seemed to bring her even this close. She sat on a chair at the bus station, she didn't have a destination yet but she wasn't going home till she saw Daniel. An old man was reading something in a paper that caught her attention. Right there. In the newspaper. Was Daniel's face. She snatched the paper from the old man without permission. “Hey, Give me that,” The man yelled. “I'm sorry Sir, I saw something that caught my attention. Forgive my manners,” Kira apologized, handing the man the paper. “This guy right?” The old man pointed to Daniel's face which owned a large space on the paper. Kira nodded frantically, “Yeah, how do you know?” The old man smiled, his eyes crinkled at the corners. “Who wouldn't like him? He's handsome, intelligent, successful, he's been on the Forbes list of young innovative millionaires for three years, I'd swoon over him if I were a girl too. Too bad I'm not,” The old man chuckled playfully but the joke didn't sit well with Kira. She tried to tell herself that Daniel didn't abandon her. “Something's not right,” Kira didn't realize she'd spoken out loud. “What? Do you know him?” The old man asked. “Umm…No. Yeah,” Kira stuttered, confused and shaken. “Are you sure? Have a closer look,” The man gave her the newspaper again, “He's married too,” The paper fell from Kira's hands. She'd received different types of shocking news in the last seven years of her life but this one was devastating, it shook her to the core. “Are you okay?” The old man asked. Concerned for Kira. She picked the paper up again and looked at it, she wanted to be sure she wasn't mistaking Daniel for another guy. “Daniel Harry, the CEO of New World Tech will be present at the opening of his newest establishment, New World Hotel. Which is rated as a seven-star hotel. The likes of Jason Watson, Dominic Oliver, and a few other men who have contributed to society with their innovative ideas will be present at the opening…” Kira couldn't read through because her breath hitched. She shut the paper harshly. Daniel's dream had come through and he never checked on her? He is even friends with her father? How? Didn't he know she went to prison? There was no way he hadn't heard about it in seven years. The old man watched her intently. “Where's the New World Hotel?” Kira asked, hiding her tears. “It’s quite a distance from here,” “How far is it?” “A mile or two,” Kira gave the old man his paper. “Thank you,” She muttered before scurrying away. She found a bus that was heading in the direction of the hotel and soon she was standing in front of the building. People were gathered around, the opening ceremony was either ongoing or about to begin and people were everywhere. Kira knew that with her T-shirt and jeans, she wouldn't make it inside so she turned the building and snuck in through the back of the building and she found herself in the kitchen. She stole one of the uniforms and threw it on. She swept her way inside the place, her eyes desperately searching for Daniel, but she didn't see him, she kept looking around and for a split second, She didn't watch her steps and bumped into a man dressed in a fine suit. He was on the phone with someone. Their eyes met for a second. He was good-looking and tall, with a sharp jawline and a charming aura to match his looks. Kira lost herself in his features but hearing the name ‘Daniel’ swung her out of that daze. She just muttered a ‘sorry’ and left the man there, she continued her search for him and when she saw him, her eyes welled with tears. Happy tears. ‘My Daniel,’ She said to herself as she swam through the crowd of people to meet him. She pushed some people on the way but there was no time for sorry, there was something more important. She got to him and touched him from behind. “Daniel,” He turned to her and she smiled at him but he grimaced, pulling out his handkerchief to clean the part where she had touched. “Who are you?” He asked, Kira's smile dipped into a frown.
