CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE The Air SplicerI never imagined it would prove so easy. Though they looked like men, the Wasp guards contained all the peculiarities of their Vespae nature. Sugar attracted them into a swarm. It was Lily’s suggestion and once we sprang the trap, the plan unfolded without delay. I declared my official sixteenth summer, though the real one had taken place months before. “It will unite everyone,” I whispered to Galveston at dinner. “We can have food and dancing.” I put exaggeration into my sigh and resurrected the stance of a spoiled princess. “Kuiti took me abroad and denied me a party.” I fluttered my eyelashes and tried to appear as pathetic an adversary as possible. Galveston shrugged and shook his head. “No, I can’t allow anything to distract from Mother’s presence.”
