CHAPTER ONE – The Night Everything changed
Rain hammered against the windshield, relentless and angry, but I ignored it. Lagos nights were never quiet, but tonight felt different too heavy, too sharp, like the air itself was warning me. I tightened my jacket as I stepped out of the Uber in front of the Hilton Banquet Hall. I didn’t belong here. My small apartment, my digital security job, my life of screens and data this world of glittering chandeliers and champagne glasses dripping with money wasn’t mine. My phone buzzed. Are you inside? Hurry jor, you’re missing the fun! I smiled faintly. That was Chioma, my best friend and eternal night-life enthusiast. Always ready for the drama, the music, the perfect i********: shot. I shoved the phone into my bag and stepped inside. The hall was alive with laughter, music, and the soft glow of lights reflecting off polished floors. Lagos’ elite moved like they owned the universe. And then I saw him. Alexander Durojaiye. He stood on the balcony above, broad shoulders in a perfectly tailored dark suit, one hand in his pocket, the other holding a glass of whiskey as if it belonged to him by right. No smile. No softness. Just raw, commanding presence. My heart stuttered. Not because he was handsome he was beyond handsome. But because everyone in that room gravitated toward him, unconsciously obeying his presence. And his eyes God his eyes found me instantly. Locked on me. I looked away. Mistake. Chioma’s voice cut through my panic. “Babe! You’re finally here! Come, let me introduce you” I glanced back, but he appeared behind her. Closer. Too close. My chest tightened. His cologne deep, intoxicating, dangerous hit me before his voice did. “You shouldn’t stare at men like that,” he said quietly, meant only for me. “Someone might think you want something.” Heat shot through me, low and impossible to ignore. His tone wasn’t harsh. It was… possessive. “I wasn’t staring at you,” I lied, lifting my chin, trying to sound brave. One corner of his mouth curved into a slow, dangerous smirk. “Then why are you shaking?” My pulse betrayed me. He stepped closer, body brushing mine. Warm. Solid. Irresistible. “Who… who are you?” I whispered. His eyes darkened. “Someone you should stay away from.” But he didn’t step back. And neither did I. His fingers brushed my wrist just a whisper of touch but it was enough to make my knees weak. Electricity sparked, hot and deep, and settled low in my stomach. Then, suddenly a loud crash. People screamed. Security rushed. A fight had broken out near the entrance. But he didn’t flinch. Not once. His gaze stayed locked on me. “Leave here. Now,” he ordered. “Why? What’s happening?” I asked, panic clawing at my throat. He leaned close, lips grazing my ear. The air between us crackled. “Because the night just changed,” he murmured. “And you don’t know it yet… but so has your life.” Before I could respond, he grabbed my hand firm, warm, commanding and pulled me through a hidden side door just as chaos consumed the hall. Chioma called after me, her voice drowned in screams. “Ada! Wait!” I didn’t look back. My heart raced. My breath tangled. And all I could think: Who is this man? And why does it feel like my life just became his?
