CHAPTER EIGHTEEN The engines were beeping loudly with their lights blinking away. The doctors and nurses busied themselves but did not look hopeful. Julius pulled Mabel into his arms and wrapped his hands around her. She buried her face in his chest. A little while later after pressing almost every key in anticipated haste, the chief surgeon motioned for the white sheets to be rolled over the body and Mabel let out the first note of a long wail. Martha was very sociable and so the hall was full as was the burial ground later that day. Solemn hymnals were sung and the line was long. Julius watched Mabel the whole time and hoped secretly that she was okay. He remembered the agony he had been through at his own time. Considering all that he had heard, this was the straw that broke the camel
