CHAPTER1
I was startled and pale. My face suddenly lost its color. For a moment it seemed like I wasn't hearing anything else. My father waved his hands before my face to ensure that I was still breathing "Maya? Are you listening to me at all? "I don't understand what you are saying. Can you break it down a bit?" I stared at my parents with a confused and funny look on my face. My parents were sitting opposite me. They were arguing some minutes ago before I stepped out of my room. but now? everywhere seemed quiet and calm. Father had insisted that I join them. I obeyed like the obedient child that I was, now I was already wishing I didn't see them today. "You need to understand Maya, I don't think I can do this anymore. I have tried my best to do everything I could, I wish I never put myself into all these." For the first time, My father looked like a clown before me. I gave out a dry laugh and placed my palm on my face. Did Father mean what he said? "Father, did something happen recently? Why are you saying this now? What do you mean by that? Remember, this is the family business we're talking about, how do we cope with all these now? I didn't wait for my father's reply, I looked at my mother with a glimmer of hope and pleading eyes. "Mother, say something, this can't happen now, Can you stop him? There's nothing left" I was near tears already. "Within a twinkle of an eye we will be wretched, please do something." Tears were threatening to spill. My mom said nothing to me, it was like I was the only one in the room. Our family had become a shadow of itself since my father's company dwindled, Father had to borrow from a few people he knew, and it still didn't get better, worst of it all. Our only house in Ontario was leased out, that was the height of it. And now? My Dad wants to fold the company, and I was hoping the company would pick up again sooner. Now father's yet to shock me further. It shouldn't go down like this. "What is wrong with you Maya? are you blind that you can't see anymore? Why are you making it look like my fault? You should be grateful you're still alive, I should have sold you too." My father poured his frustration on me. The least he could do to relieve the pressure he was harboring. "Of course Father what's left? sell me!! Probably this will be the best time for the company to go back in shape, it was waiting for me to be the sacrificial lamb before things become normal" I didn't even know when I burst out in anger, he has never had time to talk to me about the company, he doesn't even care about my input, All he ever cared about was the business. Now that it's falling or should I say fallen, He's telling me? And even threatening to fold it up? it was the height of it for me. "When worse comes to worst, I'm the first to know, like you cared about my input all this while." "What are you talking about?" My dad didn't wait for me to speak. "After all, we're family, we share everything." "Including your mistakes and arrogance? I raised my brows at my father. "Even your wife is speechless because she can't relate to what you're saying" While I and my dad argued back and forth, my mother remained silent. "I was only trying to do the best for us, it's not like I sat back doing nothing" "I think you should carry this load yourself, When this company was half and hearty, I told you that your reckless spending and placement of wrong priorities was putting the company at risk you barely listened, and now we're all in the mess you created. I can't imagine Mom letting you do all of this" I hissed. My mom retorted immediately. "Now you're involving me? How has this got to do with me, Now I get a fair share of the blame because I led his hand into it like a robot. "I don't understand what's going on, all I know is that both of you should fix this yourselves, my input was never important till the company came crashing, I just hope this doesn't affect me in any way, I just want to believe I'm dreaming." I stormed out of their sight before I heard anything else, I marched into my room. Father tried calling me I paid him deaf ears. I murmured as I landed on my bed, I was seriously boiling inside trying to imagine how a once rich man's daughter was going become a peasant soon. I wish I had where to hide when the worst comes to worst. I didn't want to think too much about it. My buzzing phone attracted my attention, it was a message from Sandy, my coursemate. I'm in school now, I haven't seen you anywhere. It suddenly dawned on me that I had classes to catch up with. Damnit!! I didn't waste any more time, I took my bath and dressed up, I wore a short black gown, applied some make-up, and let my hair fall on my shoulders, before heading for my shoes. I'm always helping Sandy keep to time and get serious with his studies. Today, I'm the one changing my standards, all thanks to my parent's foolish idea. My mom left my Dad, he just ended his call on the phone. "Where are you going" he asked when he saw I had changed my clothes. To think my dad forgot I had school to attend to was amusing. I ignored him completely with husky steps. "To go about your affairs in this situation is what I need to applaud you for, you're so nonchalant! no more allowances for you." I scoffed and left him screaming out his lungs.
