Chapter 5 The next morning, Destiny woke up to the sound of birds chirping and the distant hum of the city. She stretched her arms and yawned, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. Today was her first day at the hospital, and she was eager to start her residency program. She got out of bed and walked to the balcony, pushing open the curtains to let in the bright sunlight. The view took her breath away - the city was awakening, and the streets were coming alive. The sound of horns honking, people chattering, and vendors calling out their wares filled the air. Destiny took a deep breath, feeling the warm breeze on her skin. She could smell the scent of freshly brewed chai wafting from the street below, mingling with the sweet fragrance of jasmine flowers. She watched as the city came to life, people rushing to work, street vendors setting up their stalls, and the sound of temple bells ringing in the distance. After a quick shower, Destiny got dressed in her crisp white coat and grabbed her bag. She was ready to start her day. Rohan was waiting for her downstairs, and they set off for the hospital. The traffic was chaotic, with cars, buses, and motorcycles weaving in and out of each other. Destiny held on tight as Rohan navigated the streets with ease. They drove past the iconic Mumbai University, with its stunning Victorian architecture and sprawling gardens. They turned onto the busy Dr. E. Moses Road, where the sound of construction and the smell of diesel fumes filled the air. As they approached the hospital, Destiny's heart started beating faster. She was about to start her residency program, and she was eager to meet her colleagues and learn from the best. The hospital was a sprawling complex with multiple buildings and a maze of corridors. Destiny followed Rohan to the main entrance, where a group of nurses and doctors were waiting to greet her. "Welcome to Mumbai General Hospital," said Dr. Patel, a warm smile on her face. "We're thrilled to have you on board, Destiny. We're looking forward to working with you." Destiny smiled, feeling a sense of belonging. She was ready to start her journey as a resident doctor in Mumbai. The day was a whirlwind of activity, with Destiny meeting her colleagues, attending meetings, and getting familiar with the hospital's systems. She was assigned to the internal medicine department, and her first patient was waiting for her. As she walked into the patient's room, Destiny felt a sense of calm wash over her. She was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, and she was eager to learn and grow as a doctor. The patient, a young woman named Leela, looked up at her with anxious eyes. "Hello, Doctor," she said, her voice trembling. "I have been having trouble breathing, and the pain is getting worse." Destiny smiled, taking Leela's hand. "Don't worry, Leela. We're going to take care of you. Let's take a look, shall we?" As Destiny examined Leela, she could hear the sound of the city outside, the horns honking, the vendors calling out their wares, and the sound of laughter and music filling the air. She knew that she was exactly where she was meant to be, and she was ready to face whatever lay ahead but she still tried to put all her focus on the patient before her, which is her first priority. Destiny spent the next few hours examining Leela, running tests, and consulting with her colleagues. She was determined to get to the bottom of Leela's symptoms and find a way to help her. As the day drew to a close, Destiny met with Dr. Patel to discuss Leela's case. "I think it's a case of pneumonia," Destiny said, presenting her findings. "But I'm not entirely sure. I would like to run some more tests." Dr. Patel nodded, a look of approval on her face. "Good job, Destiny. Let's run the tests and see what we can do for Leela." Destiny smiled, feeling a sense of accomplishment. She was starting to get the hang of this residency thing. As she left the hospital, Destiny felt a sense of exhaustion wash over her. It had been a long day, but it was also exhilarating. She knew that she was learning and growing, and that was all that mattered. Rohan was waiting for her outside, and they set off into the night, the city lights twinkling around them. "How was your first day?" Rohan asked, as they drove through the streets. "It was amazing," Destiny replied, a smile on her face. "I feel like I'm exactly where I'm meant to be." Rohan smiled, nodding in approval. "You'll do great things here, Destiny. I can tell." Destiny smiled, feeling a sense of gratitude. She was glad she had come to Mumbai, and she was excited to see what the future held. As they drove through the city, Destiny couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder. She was living in a city that never slept, a city that was full of life and energy which often reminds her of home. She had a different perspective on India before but she can feel few similarities with Nigeria and she was glad she actually put in for this particular residency program. The city was calling, and Destiny was ready to answer. As they drove, Rohan pointed out various landmarks and shared stories about the city. Destiny listened intently, taking in the sights and sounds of Mumbai. They drove past the iconic Gateway of India, with its stunning arches and intricate carvings. They turned onto the busy Marine Drive, where the sound of the waves and the smell of the sea filled the air. Destiny felt a sense of peace wash over her, as she watched the sun set over the city. She knew that she was exactly where she was meant to be, and she was grateful for this opportunity. As they arrived at the apartment, Destiny thanked Rohan and got out of the car. She walked to the door, feeling a sense of excitement and anticipation. She was ready to start her new life in Mumbai and explore every opportunity that comes with it and grow to be a competent doctor.
