The Preparation
Chapter 1
Destiny Madu sat cross-legged on her bed, surrounded by dog-eared textbooks, scribbled notes, and colorful flashcards. The warm glow of her desk lamp cast a cozy ambiance over the room, illuminating the posters of her favorite Nigerian artists on the walls. The scent of freshly made Nigerian Jellof rice wafted from the kitchen, mingling with the faint tang of eucalyptus from the ointment she applied to her temples earlier that morning to ward off the impending headache.
As a final-year medical student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Destiny's life was a blur of lectures, clinical rotations and study sessions. But she thrived in this environment, fueled by her passion for medicine and her determination to make a difference in her community.
Destiny's phone buzzed, breaking the silence. She picked it up, and a message from Funmi flashed on the screen: "Hey girl, don't forget we're meeting at the library at 7 pm to study for our pharmacology exam!"
Destiny smiled, feeling a surge of gratitude for her best friend and study partner. She quickly typed a response, confirming their plans and then returned to her studies.
As she pored over her notes, Destiny's mind began to wander to her future plans. She had applied for a residency program in India, drawn by the country's renowned medical institutions and diverse patient population. The thought of moving to a new country, away from her family and friends, was daunting, but Destiny was determined to take the leap and pursue her dreams.
Just then, her mother called out from the kitchen, "Destiny, come eat something! You've been studying for hours." The sound of sizzling chicken and the aroma of jollof rice wafted up the stairs, making Destiny's stomach twinge with hunger.
Destiny saved her work, stretched her arms over her head, and headed downstairs to join her family for a quick meal. The kitchen was warm and inviting, the way she loved it. Her mother, a retired nurse, was a master of the kitchen, and Destiny couldn't resist her cooking.
"How's studying going, dear?" her mother asked, passing her a plate of steaming hot jollof rice and fried chicken.
"It's going well, Mum," Destiny replied, taking a bite of the flavorful chicken. The spices danced on her tongue, and she closed her eyes, savoring the taste. "I'm just trying to get everything done before the exams."
Her father, a retired civil servant, nodded thoughtfully. "You're doing well, Destiny. We're proud of you." He passed her a glass of ice-cold Fanta, and Destiny took a refreshing sip, feeling grateful for her family's support.
After lunch, Destiny headed back to her room to get a few more hours of studying in before her study group session. As she settled in, her mind began to wander to India and the possibilities that lay ahead.
She imagined herself working in a bustling hospital, surrounded by patients from different cultures and backgrounds. She pictured herself learning from experienced doctors and making a difference in the lives of her patients.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm orange glow over the room, Destiny's phone buzzed again. This time, it was an email from the Indian medical council, informing her that she had been accepted into the residency program.
Destiny's heart skipped a beat as she read the email. She couldn't believe it – all her hard work had paid off. She felt a mix of excitement and nervousness as she thought about the journey ahead.
She quickly sent a message to Funmi and her family, sharing the news. The room erupted in cheers and congratulations, and Destiny felt a sense of pride and accomplishment wash over her.
As she prepared to leave for her study group session, Destiny knew that this was just the beginning of an exciting new chapter in her life.
The clock struck 7 pm, and Destiny gathered her things, ready to head out. She took one last look at the email on her phone, feeling a sense of anticipation for the journey ahead.
"I'm coming, India," she whispered, smiling to herself.
